My letter to Harry Reid and the 5 Democratic Senators

who stood in the way of the assault weapons ban:

Five Cowardly Senators

I am shocked and amazed that the assault weapon ban is going down in defeat without a vote only a few weeks after the massacre in Newtown. This legislation is wildly popular, but the NRA was relying on our representatives coming back into their influence after a short period of time. I hope you enjoy the blessings of this organization, that has done so much to keep our nation unsafe. I, in the meanwhile, will do all in my power to elect representatives who share my values about gun safety and will work to defeat all those who serve as enablers to mass murder.

You know half the country would be outraged, half would say it doesn't change anything. I was thinking, if Emitt Til incident happened today, half the country would still not be moved. Sad world we live in.

2. You forgot Sen. Angus King-Maine-I.

who has said he's skeptical of the AWB, also Sen. Joe Donnelly-D-IND. who has said he opposes it.
Sen. Feinstein said yesterday that she has fewer than 40 votes for the AWB and the mag limit which would mean that there are more than 6 Dem senators telling her that they would have voted against it.

Every one of those Sen. are in very pro gun states and are up for re-election in 2014 and are only doing what their constituents want them to do.

Sen. Reid's office in Nevada has been getting bombarded with calls and e-mails opposing the AWB and the mag limit.

10. I doubt it will do any good.

These Sen. are only doing what their constituents want them to do.
Sen. Feinstein knew from the get go that her AWB and mag limit faced a near certain defeat in the Senate and a certain defeat in the repub. controlled House.
I do admire her for her tenacity though.

4. The whole thing was a moot point when the filibuster reform was defeated

by the "Spineless 7" it pretty much defeated any gun legislation as well.

6. I don't really think that the filibuster would have mattered in this instance,

even Sen. Feinstein said yesterday that she didn't even have 40 votes for the AWB.

8. She couldn't find 40 votes to pass the bill?

Yeah that is bad. She would have needed the entire D caucus plus 5 Republicans to get it to the floor.

9. Sen. Reid said that's why he separated it from the package

and Sen. Feinstein acknowledged the fact that she has less than 40 votes.

I think it's safe to say that the AWB and the mag limit are pretty much toast in the Sen., even if it made it out of the Sen. to the House, it faced a sure defeat there as the repub. control that branch of Congress.

5. I doubt that either of my Senators would have voted for it had it come to the floor

Leahy and Sanders. Yes, Leahy ushered it through judiciary but he was sounding very hesitant about voting for it.

13. Well 55 with the two I's, but they would have needed 60 to overcome the filibuster

She would have needed all 55 plus 5 Republicans. The Republicans weren't going to budge, at least not enough to overcome cloture. I think all the other Ds knew it would never get to the floor so they feel they have cover not to support it. It's pretty sad if that is the case.

15. There are too many Dems from pro-gun conservative states up for reelection in 2014

most, if not all, ran on pro-gun platforms.

I think too many here overestimate the support for an AWB in America.
