About NURSES: Somebody asked: "You're a nurse? That's cool, I wanted to do that when I was a kid. How much do you make?" The nurse replied: "HOW MUCH DO I MAKE?" ... I can make holding your hand seem like the most important thing in the world when you're scared. ... I can make your child breathe when they stop. ... I can help your father survive a heart attack. ... I can make myself get up at 5 a.m. to make sure your mother has the medicine she needs to live. ... I work all day to save the lives of strangers. ... I make my family wait for dinner until I know your family member is taken care of. ... I make myself skip lunch so that I can make sure that everything I did for your wife today is charted. ... I make myself work weekends and holidays because people don't just get sick Monday thru Friday. ... Today, I might save your life. ... How much do I make? All I know is, I make a difference. Re-post not only if you are a nurse or you love a nurse, but most importantly, re-post this if you respect their work.

(23,278 posts)I have seen way too many deaths (especially during the AIDS epidemic),but holding a hand and seeing relief as someone takes their last breath,or saving a kid who aspirated,or managing to hit the last vein so we could start iv fluids on a dehydrated pregnant woman...and having her bring the baby in to hug you...that makes it worth it.Ya had to be there.

(53,339 posts)I was a wounded soldier who'd been medevac'd to an evac. hospital. I had a facial wound and, choking on blood and fragments of bone and teeth, and it was a struggle to breathe and to stay conscious.
The ORs were full of other casualties we'd sent back, so my gurney was rolled against a wall until an O.R. was available. A nurse came back to check on me and discovered I'd stopped breathing. Thanks to her diligence, they were able to do a tracheostomy in time. I was 21, and my nurse truly was a lifesaver.
Afterward, I continued to receive excellent care from many nurses over a long term of treatment. Ever since then, nurses have always had a special place in my heart.

(3,186 posts)It takes a special kind of person to do that work. I know-- My mother, 2 of my sisters and a niece are nurses. Niece is just a CNA (right now) but is working toward her RN. And hey, they do some important work too. CNA's I mean.
Thanks for posting this Yooperman. I will pass it on to them.
