'Deep Throat' star Harry Reems dies at 65

Harry Reems, the former porn actor best known for his role in "Deep Throat," has died at the age of 65.

First reported by his friend Don Schenk, Reems' death has been confirmed by Gawker. Schenk wrote that Reems died of pancreatic cancer at a VA hospital in his adopted home of Utah.

In a 2005 interview, Reems estimated that he starred in between 300 and 400 adult films, though his role in "Deep Throat" was a last-minute adjustment by the film's director, Gerard Damiano, when the original star was unable to perform his duties. Reems was working lights on set, part of an attempt to learn the craft of film, when he was thrust into porn history.

Reems was arrested in 1974 on conspiracy to distribute obscenity across state lines, in what became a famed trial that held broader implications for creative freedom. Jack Nicholson and other stars lent him support, while "Deep Throat's" other star, Linda Lovelace, testified against him. He was convicted in 1976, but it was overturned in 1977.

in that business, and men are the disposables: They need only keep an erection under the lights with everyone standing around, no easy thing. He and Johnny "Wad" Holmes were exceptions in terms of pay & steady work.

I'm a little surprised at the cause of death though, I always thought he'd die while he was having a stroke

I am glad he was able to turn his life around after years of alcoholism and have a successful real estate career.

I saw a documentary about the obscenity case one time. I couldn't figure out with that birth name why he would bother to change it for porn

No treatments, and unlike lungs/livers - no transplants. That demon took Bill Hicks, Patrick Swayze, Steve Jobs, Luciano Pavarotti, Sally Ride and hundreds more that don't come to mind - within a year of diagnosis. No symptoms typically until it is stage 4.

I have long feared that this is how I will die, so it tends to catch my attention. No real reason for that fear - it just lingers with me.

RIP, Mr Reems. Never saw your work and don't have a clue who you were, but I hope you are in a better place now.
