for his idiotic actions against Planned Parenthood staffers. YAY.
On Tuesday, school officials at Benson High School in Portland, Oregon removed 11-year veteran teacher Bill Diss from the classroom on and placed him on paid leave, reports The Oregonian.
The reason that Diss is getting dissed? To hear the math teacher tell it, school officials have singled him out because he is a devout Roman Catholic with a reputation for declaring his staunchly pro-life views.
Diss recently attempted to prevent two Planned Parenthood representatives from making a presentation to his class because, he said, they didnt have suitable identification. They were at the school to play a role in a voluntary sex education course, according to local NBC affiliate KGW.

This incident isnt Disss first suspension-related rodeo, though. He told The Oregonian he has endured two suspensions just this year. The exact causes of those suspensions are not entirely clear, though they seem to be related to Disss outspokenness.
One letter Diss received from the Portland Public Schools cites unprofessional, intimidating and/or harassing behavior.

(35,392 posts)we had a RW nutjob write a letter to a local weekly saying that, when teachers whose contracts have ended and are in negotiation for a new one "go on strike", they should be all canned because they finished their contract; that the obligation was fulfilled. And there are "plenty more (unemployed teachers willing to 'work') where they came from".

wait ... two suspensions? Usually you get "suspensions" after verbal and written warnings.
Three strikes?

He can go teach in one of their schools, but my suspicions are that this guy is a little bit of an arse and would piss them off, too.

Diss has said there was a misunderstanding about the reference to 82nd Avenue, which is known for prostitution, but admitted to talking about Planned Parenthood and religious beliefs in class. Because he doesn't stop students from expressing their own views, he says, it can be appropriate.
This teacher disagrees. It's one thing to teach students how to debate, to engage in vigorous conversation about controversial topics, and to express their thoughts, ideas, and pov in appropriate ways.
The teacher, though, is in a position of power. It's not appropriate for the adult to take sides. To moderate a discussion, to keep it respectful and constructive, yes. To offer up personal opinions, no. We aren't there to influence them to one side or another, but to make sure that they use evidence to form a pov and argue it; to avoid logical fallacy.

(16,831 posts)You're exactly right. Everything you said.
A teacher's job is to ensure students are using good evidence and to make sure all students feel safe to express their opinions. I'm extremely liberal and an atheist, but I'd bet everything I own that my students would never guess that.

He doesnt do it a lot, but students do make fun of him for being against it and everything," said junior Tysha Harrell. "When he does talk about it, he does have really good views and everything, but sometimes he goes too deep into it. He brings religion into it,
She and her friend Pharoah Dawan' Fluker said they liked Diss as a teacher, but added that some kids have baited him.
And The Oregonian:
In December, Diss helped organize a large group to protest the program at a school board meeting. "This is a chance to get healed so that filth doesn't have to be handed to other people," Diss said at the time.
This guy should just teach at a Catholic school if he believes so much in his faith.

Maybe the students he has harassed can go to his church and give their opinions to him there.
