(5,275 posts)I knew Steven Moore was a complete right wing sell out tool, but surprisingly the HuffPost lady was just about as irritating, right down to bringing up the bestiality nonsense as it relate to same sex marriage.
At least Bernie got help from Bill and that bright 19 year old kid he brought out.
Maher was dead on in that Moore and his right wing pals never mention debt and spending when the R's are in the WH, they spend like drunken sailors.

(541 posts)But the idiot Moore bought up the point that the $ in the SS trust fund had been spent. Gee, I wonder where it went? Did we spend it on a Carnival cruise? Oh wait, I believe it was used to pay for 2 wars. There is a very technical explanation for this, it appears legitimate, but basically the oligarchs don't want to pay it back. I kind of wish Sanders had been able to articulate that. Still, I understand that it would have been all many people could have done not to deck him.

(62,325 posts)And US Treasury Bonds are backed by the 'full faith and credit of the US Government'. I guess the moron also doens't know that the SS fund has been getting interest on those 'spent' funds just like all the US Government's OTHER creditors, such as China and Japan. Is he trying to scare our creditors into calling in their debts? That would CRASH the entire government.
Why are such morons even allowed on TV? They are a threat to our security.

You see, by openly offering to cut Social Security, President Obama has made the Democratic Party into 'the party that tried to cut Social Security. That's incredibly unpopular with people across the board-- not just Democrats. And that means BIG wins in 2014!

(8,267 posts)Belittle my concern about the use of words like "bimbo" and "tits" -- words typically used to objectify and demean women. Clearly, you don't have a problem with objectifying or demeaning other women. How sad for you.

(75,480 posts)If you really could only see how silly your statements are.
I've been an advocate for survivors of relationship violence for more than thirty years. I've created and facilitated peer support groups in three states. I cannot count how many survivors cited verbal abuse -- including being called bimbos and sluts -- as a source of almost unrecoverable pain. Virtually all survivors agree that, while broken bones, cuts and bruises heal relatively quickly, recovery from verbal/emotional abuse takes much longer.
Calling me 'honey' and 'silly' is rude and demeaning. Given the language you've used herein above, however, I'm not surprised.
I have a life -- a full and fulfilling life. And I will continue to address sexism and misogyny, no matter from whence it comes, or from whom.

chervilant
(8,267 posts)nor necessary. Using rude, sexist language about any woman is demeaning and unnecessary. You disrespect yourself first and foremost, showing both a serious lack of sensitivity to feminist issues, and a rather banal approach to characterizing people with whom you take issue.
sabrina 1
(62,325 posts)on TV let's not have bimbos like that representing women.

(8,267 posts)It seems to me that those who seek to diminish DU feminists are growing ever more derisive and divisive -- striving to be "right" or to have the last word. I think using sexist terms shows a lack of self respect, as well as a lack of respect for all women.

(65,616 posts)So now this is about diminishing DU feminists...funny I thought it was about a show on TV.
sabrina 1
(62,325 posts)That is what struck me also, as I said below before reading your comment.
The rest of us have to fight to make it known that we are feminists and just because we do not swoon every time we see a word that someone or other is going find offensive, it appears we are not feminists. Which is why most women here do not discuss the actual important issues women really are concerned about on DU. Women's issues were taken over and misrepresented long ago here. We go elsewhere to talk about real issues.
chervilant
(8,267 posts)Having witnessed most of this brouhaha (I've bookmarked several OPs to reference in my own OP about sexism and misogyny on DU), I've noticed the following:
~specific DUers are being maligned and their posted comments misrepresented.
~an identifiable few routinely show up to post derisive, defensive screeds.
~most of these specific DUers have little or no knowledge of feminism, sexism or patriarchy.
~attempts to recommend books or articles are ignored or ridiculed.
~those who continue to post derisive or defensive responses typically use absolutes.
I do not go "elsewhere to talk about real issues." I do not malign feminists. I do not presume to know that "only a small group of DU's women are feminists."
sabrina 1
(62,325 posts)feminist. Why would you assume that only a small group of women here are feminists? It's interesting that you diminish DU feminists who are not part of that small group who seem to believe that the most important issue facing women in the world today, is what words people use.
chervilant
(8,267 posts)the 'n-word' is "just a word." We could argue that "redneck" is "just a word." We could argue that "Rethuglican" is "just a word." The homily "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me" exists specifically because verbal attacks are perniciously damaging.
Countless survivors of relationship violence have shared with me their pain and anguish from being relentlessly verbally abused by their partners, including being called "bimbos" and other demeaning, sexist labels. For them, and many other women, "bimbo" is NOT "just a word."
sabrina 1
(62,325 posts)simply ridiculous. But I have noticed the attempts to compare what women are dealing with today to what African Americans dealt with for centuries, and Gays. My feeling about that is, it is an attempt to diminish the struggles for freedom for those groups. Today's women cannot in any way be compared to those struggles. It is downright insulting frankly, to women and to them.
you think feminism -- and our efforts to end patriarchy, sexism and misogyny -- pales in comparison to the civil rights movement and the equal rights efforts of our LGBT brethren? Have I got that right?
I'm stunned that you have derisively diminished the experiences of the countless survivors of relationship violence with whom I've done advocacy for more than thirty years. I cannot comprehend why you are so callous about their pain.
I find your post and your attitude "downright insulting," and I sincerely hope you are never challenged to advocate for a survivor of relationship violence.
sabrina 1
(62,325 posts)that society recognizes the right of the victims not be assaulted, to slavery, laws that made African Americans non-people, laws that PREVENT Gays from marrying, from having the right to fully participate in this society, from joining the military until very recently???
Let me say it again, there are laws against the crime you mentioned.
There were and still are laws PREVENTING Gays from marrying, from serving in the military until just one year ago. Where are the laws preventing women from marrying? When did our laws state that women were 'two thirds of a person'?
Yes, women had to fight for rights, such as the right to vote and thankfully they won that battle, long, long before rights for Gays and African Americans were, and we're still waiting, established.
We HAVE laws protecting women AND men who are victims of 'relationship violence'. Society therefore has agreed that 'relationship violence' is illegal.
Societal discrimination against Gays and African Americans has been well established. It is unbelievable to compare the most recent history of that discrimination, including government sanctioned discrimination, to women in America today. If you were talking about Saudi Arabia eg, I could see your point. But this is where you lose support and it angers me and other women that this extremism DOES diminish the real issues for women in America today, such as equal pay for equal rights.
People are assaulted every day in this country, men, women and children, that is against the law. Gays cannot marry still in many states. What states forbid women from marrying?
chervilant
(8,267 posts)It would take me a solid week to convey what you apparently don't know about the ongoing struggle for women's rights--here in the US and abroad.
Emancipation occurred decades before women won the right to vote. However, Black Americans, all women, and our LGBT brethren TOGETHER must continue to oppose various forms of oppression. Our common bond is our awareness of -- and opposition to -- the inequalities and oppressions engendered by patriarchy.
I am now clear you are not the erudite individual I had imagined ("for which we have laws..." , and I'm certain -- judging from your posts herewith -- that you have no interest in getting outside your specific worldview box. Please don't bother to respond; I'm relegating you to MY IL.
sabrina 1
(62,325 posts)insulting garbage aimed at women on this forum. Don't you dare tell me what i know about women's rights. You have no clue. I have seen you make outrageous comparisons here to groups who still have no rights in this country and try to compare American women to where these groups are. This is what has lost support for the women's movement in this country.
Patriarchy, a catch-phrase tossed around which encompasses all men including men who have supported women and are alienated by the extremists claiming to represent women here. Yes, we do need everyone fighting for equality for everyone. But to compare where women are today to where Gays are is a ploy designed to divide people who do need each other.
It is striking also how the small group here who have tried to set the tone for all women cannot take any disagreement at all. They do not represent women, not any women I know.
I will respond to whomever I wish to respond to. And anyone is free to respond to me regardless of whether or not they disagree with me. I don't take my ball and go home because someone disagrees with me, nor do I have anyone on ignore. I am a woman who has benefited from the real, serious work done by generations of women before me. Women who did not pit one group against another or divide women, as has been the case here on DU for years.

(62,325 posts)them. I respect them enough to assume they are capable of speaking for themselves.
I am speaking for myself, just as you speak for yourself. If you need defending, then let me know why, who is abusing you in some way. That doesn't mean 'who is disagreeing with you'.
You are disagreeing with me, people do all the time. I don't need anyone to defend me from you exercising your right to disagree with me.
Whenever I see someone being unfairly treated, anywhere, I speak up for them, women, men and children. All I see here are other women with different views, many of which I disagree with and many I agree with, having discussions.
I would love to see you stand up for all the women of DU sometimes on women's issues, what is important, what is not eg. But if you don't that's okay too.

(8,267 posts)Power Imbalance -- patriarchy, at present -- is an arbitrary socio-political construct, one that we CAN change. Essential to that change (the noble quest for gender equality) is awareness of our own gender biases.
I am dismayed that so many members of this forum delight in sarcastic, derisive, dismissive posts, especially about sexism and misogyny. Patriarchy is damaging to our entire species. We're smart enough to see that, but we are apparently too fearful to throw off the shackles of THIS oppression.
(Those who use sexist terms in thinly veiled attempts to snark at feminism are particularly pathetic...)
