J.C. Penney Won't Fire Ellen. Anti-Gay Group Loses Battle

A 'million' moms can't compete with 3 million daily viewers. After J.C. Penney announced Ellen DeGeneres as the department store's new spokesperson last week, a conservative online organization launched a campaign to have her fired. Why? Because she's openly gay.

The One Million Moms organization, an extension of the American Family Association, called on members to urge the company to rethink their decision. "Funny that J.C. Penney thinks hiring an open homosexual spokesperson will help their business when most of their customers are traditional families," reads the call to action on the group's website. "The majority of J.C. Penney shoppers will be offended and choose to no longer shop there."

But as it stands, this campaign against Ellen won't impact J.C. Penney's decision. In an emailed statement to Yahoo Shine, J.C. Penney confirmed it "stands behind its partnership with Ellen DeGeneres."

1. I would have been very, very surprised if JCPenney hadn't already discussed this possible issue.....

...and came to the conclusion to move ahead with the project anyway.....and stick to their decisions.

Good for them. They just won my admiration for their stand

4. Yes, it would appear JC Penney is smarter than the Komen Foundation.

I'm sure your're 100% correct, they actually thought about their actions before implementing them, knowing the blowback they'd receive.

I too applaud JCP for their stand and knowing a money-maker when they see one.

I'm curious why these "Mom's" didn't get all upset when Ellen was a spokesperson for that make-up company.

7. Ron Johnson is the new JCP CEO, and the company is re-imagining itself...

He didn't just fall off the turnip truck... He's the guy who built Apple's retail organization into what it is today.

So far, I like the new JCP marketing campaign.

5. Fascinating...

Looks like the right was driven back on this issue and the Kormen issue quite promptly by overwhelming response and feedback on social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube).

I think the internet helped right-wing nuts find each other years ago, and the web became a channel to amplify their rage... But, things are turning around, and their missteps are rapidly put down online... Think about the anti-gay Rick Perry video that instantly became the most disliked YouTube video of all time.

8. I don't understand why this is an issue

Why was this made public about a million moms wanting Ellen fired, why weren't they just ignored like other hate groups? We would be sitting here all day if we discussed the groups that want Obama fired from his job for being black. Or just about every minority that holds a position of power, that hate groups want to fire as well. It seem like JC Penney who have been irrelevant for some time now are looking for controversey to get their name back out there in the media. Sears, was desperate for attention as well when they hired Kim Kardashian & co. This whole blow up is so transparent.lol

Who'd want to shop in a store with a "million" Christian moms with big hair and sour faces?

16. So what if most their shoppers are "traditional families?"
Fri Feb 3, 2012, 01:23 PM

What? Do these same "traditional families" not watch Ellen's show? Do they not watch "Glee?" Do they not have a gay uncle or cousin or aunt or friend?

Members of younger "traditional families," my dear Million Moms, aren't "offended" by someone just because he or she is gay. And it's ludicrous to equate that a Mom/Dad/Kid(s) family will AUTOMATICALLY dislike gay people JUST BECAUSE they are the "traditional" nuclear family.

Silliness.

17. JCP just began with Martha Stewart contract too

Martha has left Macy's and is now featuring her products at JCP.

Martha would definitely stand up for Ellen, if needed.
