(12,496 posts)whose mother died when she was about 8. Her father is an anesthesiologist and a batshit crazy anti-choice imbecile. In fact, he's the kind who, if he had his way, would likely shoot any doctor who was pro-choice. It seems to me that people like them are out to destroy our civilzation. It also fits, though, that they'd be the people who would support Komen with ardor. Not only that, but here is a doctor, in a difficult specialty, who doesn't want to admit that biology and medicine are the foundation stones of evolution,
You have to wonder if people like that, who unquestionably support the ignorance of fundamentalism, don't have some brain condition which keeps them from embracing the true nature of the universe, and wholeheartedly add myths and lies to their beliefs. I haven't done extensive knowledge of statistics, but I would bet that the desire to fall back a couple of centuries to a "simpler" time is driven by brain abnormalties.
It could explain why some of the fundies out there, especially those who are willfully ignorant in their quest to kill thoughts of progress, are really throwbacks to neanderthals.

(8,053 posts)or something to that effect. A study has come out which says the more uneducated (and education doesn't just mean book smart)one is, the more rigidly they need for life to be set out before them. They aren't able to process nuance; their interpretation must be narrow, and in that nasty vat of stupidity is born the conservative, tea-thug voter.

(68,644 posts)UPDATE: February 3, 2012: The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation reversed its decision and continues to fund breast cancer screenings at Planned Parenthood health centers.
That's what I'm reading, I'm not seeing that they are funding abortions.

(398 posts)fund abortions. Their funding to PP was for breast exams. PP makes referrals for patients to get mammography. Some of the patients can't afford the test, so PP pays for them. PP then gets funding from SGK to do this paying.
SGK is stating, going forward, that they would rather fund the actual testing providers instead of the middleman, such as PP. So their reversal on PP is just for this year.

(12,233 posts)monies to help out with Family Planning Services, so that more unwanted pregnancies are avoided and women can access safe, and affordable care for themselves. Annual pap-smears and birth control are a god-send for young women and poor women; especially in rural areas. Hoping PP gets more and more funding and that they can open more clinics so that they can help more women. We need more Planned Parenthood offices; not less... Especially in these dire economic times. It it wasn't for PP, many women would have no option of obtaining yearly exams or birth control.. They would have to chance trying not to become pregnant or use condoms.. Seriously, how many women and men want to use condoms when they are married and in a committed relationship.... That's one of the good things about marriage (unless you are Newt and want open marriages), you get to do it naked, if you have BC to prevent unwanted accidents.
NO, people do not have sex just to procreate... That is the MOST ridiculous idiotic statement by these jack-offs lately. People actually enjoy sex and when they have the urge to have sex, they aren't always wanting to do so in order to have a baby... There are so many oopsies because in the heat of the moment, sometimes people aren't thinking about precautions.

(3,344 posts)At least that is what my mom said. She was an OB/GYN nurse in the 60& 70s. Many wealthy woman had the them done only it wasn't called abortion. Poor women were admitted after botched abortions.
i'd forgotten that. dilatation and curettage, i believe. just a little cleaning.

(3,344 posts)My mom was furious at the hypocrisy. Rich woman came in with silk and satin nightgowns and were treated like royality. A poor woman coming in after a botched abortion was treated like scum. My mom would always take the time to talk with them and tried to give comfort. She loved babies more than anyone I have ever known and was a strong pro choice advocate.

(71 posts)I had no idea that only 24 cents out of every dollar donated goes into research and cancer support from the Komen Group. That is a gross over head surcharge. That being said, I also didn't know planned parenthood assisted in breast cancer support and detection. This makes my donations and charity focusing during these hard times so much easier.

(8,200 posts)In the 2009-2010 fiscal year, ending March 31, 2010, Komen reported approximately US $400 million in earnings. Of this, $365 million (91.3 percent) came from contributions from the public, including donations, sponsorships, race entry fees, and contributed goods and services. Approximately $35 million (8.8 percent) came from interest and dividends and gains on investments.[25]
That same fiscal year, Komen reported approximately US $360 million in expenses. $283.2 million of this went towards program services: $75.4 million (20.9 percent of total expenditure) went to research, $140.8 million (39.1 percent) went to public health education, $46.9 million (13 percent) went to health screening services, and $20.1 million (5.6 percent) went to treatment services. The other $76.8 million went to supporting services, including $36.1 million (10 percent of total expenditure) toward fund-raising costs and $40.6 million (11.3 percent) toward general and administrative costs.[25]
The Komen CEO salary in 2010 was $459,406 a year.[26]
I believe that salary is extravigant when it is supposed to be a non-profit. It is like the Red Cross executive pay and which I boycotted in favor of the Salvation Army.

(8,053 posts)"Planned Parenthood supporters, including local directors within Komen's ranks, say Komen had come under pressure from anti-abortion activists. Social conservatives had lauded the move to disengage from Planned Parenthood and said it would win Komen new supporters."
what kind of stank, nasty koolaid were they drinking at komen to make them even think that that would be a brilliant course of action? Win new supporters where?
This would be a really, really good time for komen to step back away from the spotlight, rein in their PR machine for the moment and give some long, hard thought about exactly what kind of business they are in: lobbying for anti-choice groups and acting accordingly or providing health care grants for breast cancer screening for poor and under-served women in this country. Once they've figured it out, then make a declaration.
What would really be appropriate is for next month's race/walk to be run by all of those who feel that this policy which they were brazen enough to undertake was a brilliant idea. No, instead, just accept your checks from BofA, the kockbrothers and the rest of the corporate dogs buying policy in this country to the detriment of other citizens. Meanwhile, pledge to support another woman taking the same walk that day to give the money to PP directly.
