Wisconsin GOP Moves to Limit Recall Power of Wisconsin Citizens
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
4/24/13
MADISON United Wisconsin Executive Director Lisa Subeck released the following statement in response to the introduction of Assembly Joint Resolution 25 and Senate Joint Resolution 24, a Republican-backed bill calling for a constitutional amendment limiting the grounds under which Wisconsin citizens can recall elected officials
Republican legislators are introducing this politically-motivated constitutional amendment in order to shield themselves from being held accountable for their most egregious public policy overreaches
The right to recall is enshrined in our state constitution as the only mechanism that allows Wisconsin citizens to take immediate direct action against elected officials who violate the public trust through either legislative or criminal action.
The recall process is vital to ensuring legislators adequately represent the best interests of Wisconsin citizens. Absent a statewide ballot initiative process, such as a Peoples Veto, to demand direct repeal of laws that violate the publics interest, Wisconsins recall process is essential to the preservation of our democracy.
