"Pond scum."

The Note: Gun Control's Spring Awakening

"POND SCUM": That, according to ABC’s JEFF ZELENY, is the expression Sen. Jeff Flake, Republican of Arizona, used to characterize how some critics viewed him after he voted against expanding background checks two week ago during the gun control debate in Congress. In a posting yesterday on his Facebook page, Flake conceded that his “poll numbers have indeed taken a southerly turn.” The gun control debate is quiet in Washington, but it is only getting started at home for some senators, particularly those who were on the fence but opposed a bipartisan compromise on expanding background checks for people who buy weapons at gun shows and on the internet. http://abcn.ws/Zkn0XP

NEWTOWN GOES TO THE GRANITE STATE: Zeleny notes that Sen. Kelly Ayotte, Republican of New Hampshire, faced a confrontational exchange during a town meeting yesterday in Warren, N.H. The daughter of the principal killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School challenged Ayotte on her vote against the background check measure, according to the Political Scoop blog on WMUR.com. “You had mentioned that date you voted, owners of gun stores that the expanded background checks would harm,” said Erica Lafferty, whose mother was killed in the Newtown, Conn., shooting four months ago. “I’m just wondering why the burden in of my mother being gunned down in the halls of her elementary school isn’t as important.” Ayotte has been besieged with advertising from both sides of the gun debate. She apologized to Lafferty for her loss, but renewed her objections to the background check bill, saying she did not believe it would have prevented the mass shooting in Newtown. http://abcn.ws/Zkn0XP

they are looking at pro-gun candidates to run for the Senate in Montana and South Dakota.

The DSCC has not yet met with popular former Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer, according to a Democratic aide, but Democratic leaders view him as the best candidate to keep retiring Sen. Max Baucus’s (D-Mont.) seat.

The DSCC has poll data showing former Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (D-S.D.) is the strongest candidate to succeed retiring Sen. Tim Johnson (D-S.D.), although officially it has praised both Herseth Sandlin and Johnson’s son, U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson, as promising contenders.

Schweitzer and Herseth Sandlin both have "A" ratings from the National Rifle Association (NRA), which endorsed both candidates in their most recent campaigns.

Schweitzer told the National Journal in a recent interview that he is in favor of background checks, but it's unclear whether he would have supported a proposal crafted by Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) that failed in the Senate this month. He also told the publication he has “more [guns] than I need and less than I want.”

And he thinks cities should be allowed to restrict concealed weapons.

Schweitzer told the National Journal in February that he supports background checks. And in 2011, Schweitzer vetoed a bill that would have let people carry concealed weapons in Montana’s urban centers without a permit.

10 sec on Google. You should try it sometime rather than relying on the NRA for your material.

What is that? Rule # 84 from the NRA handbook?

To refresh your admittedly limited memory, the OP is about the recent gun control debate in Congress, the fact that a few cowardly Democrats voted against it, and the fact that the American people with be confronting these cowards with the objective of having universal background checks reintroduce & passed.

Maybe we should talk about the fact that you support these cowardly Democrats & their vote (which not only denies the wishes of the overwhelming majority of Americans, but undermines the Democratic Party & their majorities in Congress, and helps the worst RW extremists in the GOP), and you oppose reasonable reasonable restrictions on gun ownership, and that you oppose the assault weapons ban - all of which are effective in reducing gun violence.

The topic of discussion is the role gun control should play in 2014. Do you really think that Brian Schweitzer will support anything more than background checks.

That is my direct question to you. Care to answer it?

That was a lie. There's no incentive for me to try and answer a question based on a lie, especially if iy has nothing to do with the question at hand.

Why do you go out of your way to attack any Democrat who supports reasonable gun control legislation? Hmmm? That's a direct question based on the facts. Care to answer it?

Wed May 1, 2013, 04:35 PM

I supported universal background checks. I support all proposed gun control laws with the exception of the AWB and registration. Every one of my elected officials (all Dems that I voted for) support gun control. I live in a state with some of the strictest gun control laws in America - we already have universal background checks for example.

And you admit to be opposed to specific legislation that works to reduce gun violence, and is supported by the majority of Americans and the majority of Democrats.

What do you call something that says "I'm not a duck!", but it looks like a duck, it walks like a duck, and it sounds like a duck? A lying duck.
