You'll never be able to recoup the hours donated to the company in the form of 'casual overtime.' If your job keeps you so busy that you have to work overtime regularly, then when in pluperfect hell are you supposed to find opportunities to use comp time? Besides, if an employee decides to make a vigorous push to take all the comp time accumulated, it may not turn out so well at evaluation time or layoff time.

They won't give up, Big Money wants this badly. More money for them and more control of workers.

Their best and most important employees would be out on vacation for even more extended periods of time. I think, even from a business point of view, that this bill sucks.

Phil Jones, 29, an emergency medical technician in Santa Clara, Calif., said he's wary of how the measure would be enforced.
"Any time there's a law that will keep extra money in an employer's bank account, they will try to push employees to make that choice," said Jones, who regularly earns overtime pay. "I know how we get taken advantage of and I think this bill will just let employers take even more advantage of us."
But at a hearing on the bill last month, Karen DeLoach, a bookkeeper at a Montgomery, Ala., accounting firm, said she liked the idea of swapping overtime pay for comp time so she could travel with her church on its annual mission trip to Nicaragua.
"I would greatly appreciate the option at work to choose between being compensated in dollars or days," she said.


Is it any surprise that Phil's motivations result in higher pay relative to Karen?

It'll pass on "family friendly" justifications.

If you put your overtime money in the bank, it gets interest. They should have to give you an extra day every month on their dime. But this is still a shitty idea. If they fire you, do you get that in pay? They could fire people who have a lot of time racked up, and hire other monkey see monkey do workers, (myself included). When I was working, we would get 6 sick days a year not counting your 2 week vacation time after a years work. I ALWAYS took my 6 sick days. Sick or not. No prize for me for perfect attendance pays you time off from work just for being lazy that day, or had something else to do.
