Legislation That Would Deny Schools Ability to Suspend Defiant Students Riles Assemblyman

(Sacramento) The office of State Assemblyman Brian Jones (R-71, Santee) releases one-minute internet videos of the representative speaking about specific topics dealt with (or not) in Sacramento that drive him crazy.

In this video, Assemblyman Brian Jones responds to legislation that would deny school administrators from suspending students who “willfully” defy teachers.

AB420 would limit the ability of school administrators to suspend students grades 6-12 until a third or later offense of “willful defiance,” a term not clearly defined in the bill. It would also prohibit expulsion for such offenses and removes the option for suspension altogether for pupils in grades K-5.

"School children need to obey the rules and respect their teachers – plain and simple," Jones said in the video. "We shouldn’t be teaching kids that it’s okay to defy authority; we should be giving teachers the ability to enforce the rules. How will kids ever grow up to obey the law if they aren’t taught to obey the simple rules at school?"

If we are to survive, we need people who think, act, lead.....instead of marching in lockstep.

Students who make it very difficult for other students to learn. Most classrooms have students with varying degrees of abilities. Some students need extra attention, some students have difficulty concentrating and are easily distracted. What should be done with students who deliberately try to disrupt the whole process?

While I agree that a lot of kids get suspended over stupid crap, and that "defiance" has become a catch-all term for "we didn't like what the student was doing", I can also tell you some serious horror stories from my wifes stints as a substitute. Like the time a student, 6 inches taller and 50 pounds heavier, described LOUDLY to the class how he'd like to "pin her to the desk and fuck her like the whore she is". Or how another student wouldn't stop talking on his cellphone, and when she asked him the third time he walked up, stuck his face two inches from hers, and asked "How the fuck are you going to make me you stupid bitch? Now shut the fuck up and quit interrupting me."

My wife won't sub in high schools anymore because of the crap she's endured in them. Some kids are only in school because truancy is a crime, and have no respect for either teachers or the schools. Removing the schools ability to get these kids out of the classroom is NOT a good thing.

for the sake of the other students. Teachers should not have to put up with disrespect any more than any other person in any other workplace.

If there are rules, they should be enforced and there should be consequences for violating the rules. If there are too many rules or the rules are stupid, get rid of the rules, like the stupid zero tolerance stuff.
