This is what a hero looks like.

http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2013/05/amanda_berry_gina_dejesus_mich.html#incart_maj-story-1#incart_maj-story-1

Granted, Amanda Berry is a survivor, and it was heroic for her to take the opportunity to cry out for help. But if Charles Ramsey had chosen to keep walking – as so many of us do when we see trouble – then those women might still be in captivity today. He might not look the part, but at least three women and a 6-year-old girl are thankful he played the part. He's not Denzel or Snipes or The Rock. Charles Ramsey is a real hero.

What EXACTLY does a hero look like? And WHY was that stupid little comment necessary in such an otherwise outstanding story?

The man is a hero. If he IS a hero, then he looks the part. Should have been the end of the story.

the media likes to comment on how people look and their preconceived notions of what a hero "looks like." That kind of thing is pretty typical of them. They like to talk down about anyone who isn't rich and famous.

The man IS a hero. He IS what a hero looks like, regardless of what the media says.

30. Charles Ramsey, hero and viral superstar
Tue May 7, 2013, 07:32 PM
May 2013

It’s amazing and wonderful enough that after three women disappeared without a trace over the course of a decade, Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michele Knight were all found alive in a Cleveland house on Seymour Avenue on Monday. It’s just a bonus that the rescue happened to produce your newest viral star.

As the sound bite-frenzied media descended in the wake of the dramatic rescue, it was local Good Samaritan and Big Mac aficionado Charles Ramsey who brought an earthy levity – and blunt racial context — to the proceedings. Sure, in about an hour there will be a thousand autotuned remixes and parodies, but they will never, ever do better than the real thing.

That he’s a hero who didn’t hesitate to help a stranger in a moment of extreme crisis is indisputable. But Ramsey didn’t just assist Amanda Berry as she fled the home owned by 52-year-old former bus driver Ariel Castro. He then turned around and wove the tale into the most straight-shooting, shockingly funny interview about violence since Antoine Dodson told his neighbors that a would-be rapist is “climbing in your windows, he’s snatching your people up.”

“I heard screaming, I’m eating my McDonald’s,” he explained to the local ABC News affiliate. “I see this girl going nuts trying to get out of a house … So I figure it’s a domestic violence dispute, so I open the door.”

Ramsey told Cooper he was having "trouble sleeping" knowing that these women were next door to him all this time. When Cooper mentioned the FBI reward related to information for Amanda Berry whereabouts, he said, "I tell you what you do, give it to them... you know I got a job anyway," and pulled out his paycheck that he just picked up.

Wed May 8, 2013, 05:20 PM

It is so refreshing to see a REAL, AUTHENTIC person speaking honestly and from the heart--on network and cable news.

Usually, these outlets showcase talking heads reading scripts. If an issue is discussed, it's a split screen--with two people arguing back and forth and reciting memorized soundbytes and talking points. It's like watching robots. Nothing is ever resolved. There is no right or wrong.

Charles Ramsey spoke from the heart. He didn't have a script. He wasn't being advised by handlers. He was himself--open, honest and beautiful. It was like a tall drink of water in this desert of rehearsed viewpoints and political lines.

I think that's why people find Ramsey so endearing. He is a real human being, expressing authentic emotion. Ramsey reminds us that we are being force-fed manufactured opinions and mindless, two-minute debates that never resolve anything.

Charles Ramsey is like a healthy, organic smoothie in a world full of junk-food information and fast-food news reporting.

Love him!
