A little-known secret of the media business: we do nothing unless we get paid for it. And what pays the bills is advertising.
Cumulus Media, iirc the second-largest radio network after Clear Channel, is about to dump Rush because advertisers don't want to sponsor him. People know this.
Now consider having to sell this program to stations that are already scheduled around the clock: "We would like you to take whatever you've got scheduled for the three hours in the middle of the day off and replace it with a show with declining Arbitron ratings and no national ad accounts, and that you can't sell locally to anyone except army surplus depots and cigar stores because the host is radioactive." It's not likely he'd find new stations.

And as extreme as he's gotten, pretty soon even the local advertisers will desert him - he's out of national accounts now.

It's like the difference between a slanderer and a whistleblower.
And really, when was the last time you heard Olbermann or Maddow say something akin to the Cleveland women faking their kidnappings in order to get welfare and somehow putting the president's name into that scenario? When was the last time you heard Olbermann or Maddow call someone a slut and attempt to ruin a person's life just because they didn't like them testifying?
It's not the same at all.

.... Rush sees the walls closing in on him and he knows it is just a matter of time
before he is fired. Rush has lived in an echo chamber of his own making and even in
that protected environment things have now started to turn on him. The bombast and
planned in your face act has run its course.
Please remember Rush is just a really well thought out and planned act whose time is up.
BTW if and when Rush is shit canned he might make just as much money giving speeches
to his "dittoheads" about how he was let go for standing up for the "real american people."
Rush was not the first or will he be the last to fleece the suckers with an act.

(50,562 posts)When you live in an unsalable house (market demand for mansions is kinda low; those places sell based on the history of the people who lived in them before, and Pigboy's like Jay Gatsby in that people will forget him the second he dies), have three expensive ex-wives and an expensive current one, chain-smoke $20 cigars, vacation in Latin American sex-tourism paradises and so on and so forth, you burn through a lot of cash. I would be surprised if after all these years of being the King of AM Radio, he could put his hands on $100,000 within 24 hours without selling anything but gold or securities or committing a felony.

(70,575 posts).... good chunk of Rush's money has been put into very safe investments such
as Index Funds and what not. I do kind of hope that global warming puts the
ocean in his Florida home's living room.
According to "the internets" Rush is worth $350 million and made $69 million last year.
http://www.therichest.org/celebnetworth/celeb/radio-personality/rush-limbaugh-net-worth/
But Rush is costing the companies that hire him millions every month in lost
revenue because he is so toxic and that along w/his fat salary almost guarantee
that he will be shit canned very soon.

(7,918 posts)If they dump him its because the man is a financial embarrassment not because they do not want to continue selling his message.
The Kochs have propped him up during the long haul because he sells their racist hate agenda to the widest audience. Let's be clear about this one: He sells their hate agenda. That's what its about.
They will put more of the same thing on in his place, one way or another. His audience didn't leave. It was the effective boycott of the advertisers which makes him less desirable radio material, not the content he pushed.

(2,983 posts)Much as I hate Rush, it's rather early to start cheering his demise. The relative success of his show is largely dependent upon angry white men... of which there is certainly no shortage in the USA. Some of these angry white men are into advertising, some of them are corporate officials, government officials, military officials, radio station owners, etc.
Hurt their bank accounts enough - and eventually, yes, Rush will go the way of the dinosaur. Not quite yet though.
I hope I'm wrong, but I suspect that radio stations will be giving this asswipe plenty of airtime for years to come.
What inspires this cynical point of view of mine? Working for a radio station with rather conservative programming. I can tell you that if we pulled Rush off the air - for any reason - a whole lot of listeners would be calling in real quick, going absolutely apeshit that they couldn't listen to his high stinking fat stupidness anymore.
We even had a few call in when we filled an hour of Glen Beck with a sports show. It would be much easier for the station I work for to get rid of Glen Beck AND Howie Carr both, than to eliminate Rush.

Let's not mince words here; everyone (including Limbaugh) knows that this hate-filled, racist paranoid is going to die alone with no one feeling any grief over his death. As a matter of fact, his burial plot will probably be a featured destination for anyone in need of toilet facilities.
Limbaugh is indirectly responsible for millions of war casualties and thousands of destroyed futures. He has had his hands in the destruction of our political system and the formation of extremist, antiAmerican right wing organizations.
mwooldri
(10,303 posts)It used to be that when a new show started up and the show owners wanted to spread it wider, they paid other stations to syndicate the show. If it proved a success then new stations can pay to have the show. Obviously Mr. Limbaugh's radio show is in decline... so if Clear Channel want to keep him on the air and there is no other venue for Mr. Limbaugh to go to, then Clear Channel will have to cough up the cash.

(708 posts)I can't even count how many times over the years I've seen the claims that Limbaugh was gone/going/losing all his sponsors and going broke/shut down/toast/etc. Not a single one has come true.
It was just absolutely certain that Limbaugh was gone after Sandra Fluke.
It was just absolutely certain that Limbaugh was gone after "fake soldiers."
It was just absolutely certain that Limbaugh was gone after "hope Obama fails."
It never happened. Not even close. Even with all of the brouhaha over a couple of advertisers dropping him in the wake of Sandra Fluke, there were others lined up banging on the door to take their place.
Like it or not, he's bringing in the money, and a lot of it. He's making Clear Channel a bunch of money. A bunch of money. They're not going to kill the goose that lays the golden turd.
