Rare: Wedge Tornado Goes On For An Hour Nearly Stationary and Then Backs West

In an extremely rare situation in North-Central Kansas, a wedge tornado was nearly stationary west of Bennington, Kansas on Monday evening. This tornado was viewed by many professional storm chasers for an hour, at one time backing up and going back west and we have the slideshow for you.



This shows you how unpredictable tornadoes are. This large tornado was moving east, then north, then south, then east again, and then backed again to the west before weakening.

NROT and velocity features showed either EF2 or EF3 type winds with it. Bennington, Kansas was spared. Here is an exclusive slide show for you below on how the tornado behaved and a loop of how it backed back west. Truly a rare yet interest storm.

The Tornado was located within TWS Tornado Watch 24, issued before the storms formed.

Classic wedge and huge. What a night. Whew. Wish we could get some rain but do not want it if we have to worry about this.
