So, Kaitlyn Hunt is an immature 18 year old

and the 14 year old was wise beyond her years...

Something is not computing... please explain to me how you can come to this conclusion and not see the hypocrisy.

There should be some legal recourse for the parents of the younger girl, since the older one didn't stay the fuck away and was warned. But the 18 year old should not be labeled a sexual offender for the rest of her life. I would be for full prosecution if the 18 year old was out of H.S. In this case they were peers, which does lead me to feel the full force of the law should not be visited upon her. But something needed to be done. This was the only way they could regain control of a problem they felt was extremely serious and detrimental to their 14 year old. Parents do have the absolute right to control a fourteen year old's sexual activity with others. PERIOD! Whether a parent wants to or not is irrelevant. Parents do have that right and for good reason.

A very firmly stated, confident, emotionally charged, strongly felt position which doubtless you will defend with great aplomb.

I feel certain that fascinating intricacies in the psyches of your respondents will be flushed out by this very strongly stated position. I look forward to observing them.

From a great distance.

How did it become so well known in the media?

Was it because it was lesbian sex? Possibly. Which I think is another worthy discussion to have at some point. You don't usually see these types of cases gain such notoriety when it is heterosexual sex.

It caught the attention of gay rights activists when the mother of Kaitlyn posted on facebook:

"They were out to destroy my daughter, they feel like my daughter “made” their daughter gay. They are bigoted, religious zeolites [sic] that see being gay as a sin and wrong, and they blame my daughter."

Then it became about sexual orientation and because its in the south it makes a good story.

Its unfortunate that Kaitlyn's parents are turning out to be less than honest. I dont know what to make of it anymore

I don't think so.

There's probably a lot of reasons, including lesbian sex, which I think is indicative of the media trying to bring a sensationalistic bent to the story. Mothers have probably written things about their 18 y.o. son on the internet surrounding this same issue and it doesn't cause this media brouhaha. The media decides what gets played, not activists. And in this case they chose to give it air. Why would be the question.

I don't think the OP is any more 'obsessed' about this than the rest of DU. Your singling out of the OP is a bit 'strange', though.

I have a problem with the lengths they are going to in order to do it.

Parents cannot realistically control their teen's sexual activity. They educate in hopes that their kid makes smart decisions.

If they feel that someone has taken advantage of their kid, then I can understand making the moves in hope of preventing it in the future.

Ruining the life of an 18 year old who goes to the same school is going too far. The prosecution is going too far as well. I question if this is more than just protecting their teen. If they had gone after an 18 year old boy for his relationship with a 14 year old girl in the same fashion, then I wouldn't question it.
