Darfur tribes' battle for gum arabic trade leads to 64 deaths

More than 60 people have been killed in clashes between tribes in Sudan's Darfur region over land producing gum arabic, the substance used as a stabiliser in soft drinks.

The fluid gum is removed from certain species of acacia trees and is one of Sudan's most important agricultural export products. But some of the produce is being smuggled over the border into Chad, where it is sold for hard currency.

The deaths relating to the struggle over the land are the latest incident in a surge in violence over resources.

Members of Arab tribes, many of whom were armed by Khartoum to end an insurgency by mainly non-Arab rebels, are fighting to seize gum arabic, a commodity sought by companies such as Coca Cola.
