Teen buried alive in grave of woman he allegedly raped and murdered

LA PAZ, BOLIVIA—Villagers in Bolivia’s southern highlands buried a man alive in the grave of the woman he is suspected of having raped and murdered, an official said Thursday.

Police had identified 17-year-old Santos Ramos as the possible culprit in the attack on 35-year-old Leandra Arias Janco Sunday in a Quechua community near the municipality of Colquechaca, said Jose Luis Barrios, the chief prosecutor in Potosi province where the community is located.

Enraged, more than 200 community members seized Ramos and buried him alive alongside his alleged victim Wednesday night, according to Barrios. He said residents on Thursday blocked the road to the community, preventing police and prosecutors from reaching it.

A local reporter for an indigenous radio station, who would only speak on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals, told The AP that Ramos was tied up at the woman’s funeral. Mourners threw him into the open grave, placed the woman’s coffin in it and filled the grave with earth.

but apparently, he did not survive to face actual justice via trial...

Vigilante "justice".... sigh... One can understand what motivates it, but how often does it snare the innocent?

"Lynchings sometimes occur in rural and poor parts of Bolivia where police and other authorities are scarce."

If there were more and better governmental entities, this sort of thing might not happen as often.

If he really did it, I'm not shedding tears. But as we've seen from the American history of lynching, people want blood and it doesn't always have to be the guy who did it. You're black? Must be guilty of sumethin'. String 'im up and git 'r dun! Holy mah beer!

At least this is a little better than the American case of "Shoot a prostitute in Texas for not having sex with you, get out of jail free." Bitch took your property? Damn right you should gun her down. It's the American way! YEEEHAW!

But even as I'm not feeling bad if a real rapist is murdered, it's the same mob violence that has Muslims killing women for being raped. But oh, they feel justified. It's a bad thing to be involved with.

About a year ago I read an article about a young man who was caught by a mob after a series of break-ins. He was an epileptic had spasms while the crowd was over him. This was taken as a sign of aggression. He was beaten to death. Turned out afterwards that he was innocent.

The problem is, the government can't really do much against those lynchings for fear to look like they were oppressing the Indians and their legal traditions.
