In Manhattan. Helmeted and carrying AR15s.
I asked them if they were protecting us from the bank. They didn't seem terribly amused.

(1,589 posts)ooh, they were wearing helmets. are hockey players heavily armed too?
you want to know what heavy metal is, go see your recruiter. Then you will realize how dopey _most_ of these 'militarized police' posts are.

(53,661 posts)If they had a bomb scare, that would not have helped. Who were they expecting to come to visit them? Huh, huh?
Kinda seems like a waste of $$$.

(26,330 posts)You know they can be less armed than say the US Army and still be heavily armed, yes?
You know they can be militarized without being as armed as the US Army, yes?
Talk about dopey.

(26,330 posts)The other poster made a reference to "these 'militarized police' posts" so the scope of the conversation was expanded beyond a couple cops standing around with AR-15s.
I was commenting on the ridiculous statement that police aren't heavily armed or militarized until they are AS heavily armed as the US Army.

(32,139 posts)Yeah, when I see someone on an AMERICAN CITY STREET with that kind of outfitting, I'd consider them "heavily armed," too.
I know some here would like us to adjust to a new normal of domestic surveillance and TSA gropings and jackbooted police guarding the One Percent's banks, but I say to hell with this suggestion that anything less than what a MILITARY recruiter would show you is no big deal.

I expect, though, that sassy questions like yours will soon draw the same kind of gonzo responses out of police. It's something they're putting in their food, I think.
