Women have always made less than men in the workplace, and many of the elderly women come from a time when they made significantly less. Also, women are more likely to have jobs without pensions, or not to get pensions because they left the workforce when families were being raised.

And I also wonder about the ages of these "elderly" people. Women, in general, live longer than men. If most people lived long enough, they would run out of savings---especially in a time like this, when interest rates have been close to $0. Older people usually expected to live off of the earnings in interest on their savings.

This is hard for me to read, as a woman who will be in that situation soon enough.
