Kansas approves new science standards and I am shocked!

With my idiot Governor who does not believe in evolution (Sam Brownback) I would have swore this was not possible! But I am thrilled!

TOPEKA — The Kansas school board has approved new multistate science standards for public schools that treat evolution and climate change as key concepts to be taught from kindergarten through the 12th grade.

The State Board of Education voted 8-2 on Tuesday for standards developed by Kansas, 25 other states and the National Research Council. The new guidelines are designed to shift the emphasis to doing hands-on projects and experiments and blending material about engineering and technology into lessons.

Kansas uses its standards to develop statewide tests to judge how well schools are teaching, which in turn influence what happens in classrooms.

“I can concentrate on teaching processes — teaching kids how to think like scientists,” said Cheryl Shepherd-Adams, a physics teacher at Hays High School who traveled to Topeka to publicly endorse the new standards as vice president of Kansas Citizens for Science.

This is the Board of Edumacation which is separately elected. In KS, it goes back and forth, back and forth, between science educator friendly and lunatic Christian wackos. It's been doing so for some time now. As soon as reason returns and they pass science-friendly standards, the lunatic Christian Right gets all fussed up and votes out the educators for the edumacators.

Then, there's yet another period of edumacation according to Jeebus, followed by them getting voted out by the backlash.

And so on, and so on, ad infinitum.

be considered schizophrenic. Kansas has rational behavior for awhile and then totally loses it. Often it's forward one step and backward two. IMO the governor and about all of the legislatures are pretty wacky. As usual, the religious wackos fuck up the state like anyplace.
