it is for the most part hyperbole.

But I think intent has a lot to do with it. If I were to say for example tell lies to draw the country into a war and do it for personal gain, power, money and prestige, that might be treason. But if I expose some probably unconstitutional wrongdoing by a government agency, that seems to me to be the exact opposite of treason. That used to be called civic duty.
