LETTER: Felon Thanks The NRA
===
As a lifelong career criminal, although I no longer enjoy the right to keep and bear arms, I'd like to take a moment to express my appreciation to the National Rifle Association for nonetheless protecting my ability to easily obtain them through its opposition to universal background checks.
Upon release in a few years from my current federal sentence on bank robbery and weapons charges, I fully anticipate being able to stop at a gun show on my way home to Connecticut -- where new laws have made it nearly impossible for a felon to readily purchase guns or ammunition -- in order to buy some with which to resume my criminal activities.
And so, a heartfelt thank you to the NRA and all those members of Congress voting with them. I, along with tens of thousands of other criminals, couldn't do what we do without you.
Gary W. Bornman,
The writer is an inmate at the federal "Supermax" prison in Florence, Colo.

This was in the Hartford Courant. My instincts tell me it's satire, but I can't find any evidence of that...so unless anyone can tell me different, this looks legit.
Which is all the awesome if so.

(3,731 posts)Show me just one post where I said that. Are you sure you replied to the correct person?
I've said all along that I want UBC, a mag. limit modeled on CO law, better reporting from states to NICS, stricter enforcement of straw purchases, better mental health system.
I've never said that it's impossible to and against the law to buy a firearm w/o a background check.

(3,731 posts)you made the accusation, you provide the proof, but I understand, you can't, so you try to throw it on me.
Sorry. Not. Going. To. Work.
I provide the proof of your accusation

(19,339 posts)ETA: As in, there's a guy named Gary Bornman who's a little more interesting than the average bank robber.

I'm betting the paper checked that letter several times.

(16,038 posts)nobody in AdMax is "getting out in a few years", unless "a few years" means 10 or 20. I don't believe anyone is released from AdMax..if they are actually eligible for release they are put in the neighboring max for some time prior to release where they are monitored closely for violations. Every piece of mail going out is thoroughly screened and this letter wouldn't make it out, nor would someone in there write such a letter if they really believed they were ever getting out. Simply not buying it at all...I am the opposite, someone is going to have to prove it is legit before I would believe a single word of it.
edit..The article above says 2022 is his release date...maybe he wrote it, maybe not..it seems consistent with other writings..I still find it difficult to believe the letter could get through the screen at AdMax..

(9,126 posts)Guns are easy to get and the NRA likes it that way. The gun manufacturers themselves have admitted they do not support any restrictions because selling illegally is part of their profit structure. Profits over people!

I imagine nuance, satire, and context are indeed, quite difficult concepts for sub-literate idiots to understand, but they all do exist. Yes, indeed. They do exist.

(9,126 posts)Why are states and Congress trying to pass laws for background checks if they are all being checked?

(5,029 posts)I suppose you keep a gun nearby to protect yourself from career criminals and mentally incompetent people. What are the chances of you getting to that gun before you realize what is happening to you, by being surprised by said folks.
Need to educate yourself, here are the laws....

(41,989 posts)There is a Gary W. Bornman referenced in this book 'To Serve and Protect" by Bruce L Benson, the quote is about criminals taking 'responsibility'fot their own actions, from 1995. No way to tell if its the same guy. It's still a pretty awesome letter

(328 posts)Convicted felons who have stated they have every intention of further breaking the law upon release, (but will then blame the NRA for their crimes,) have the support of DU gun control advocates?
Ok. Got it. Thanks
