I'm actually quite curious what we, the better-informed have to say about this. No agenda for me: I'm on the fence. This is all above my pay grade.

Yes. Snowden and Greenwald are protecting our constitutional rights. We need whistle blowers.

Sort-of: I\'m glad we\'re discussing privacy issues but I\'m not sure how I feel about Snowden/Greenwald.

Totally on the fence: Not enough information out there yet. I want to know if the government is spying on me, but I also know we need to defend against attacks.

Leaning no: I think our national security requires the government to prevent possible attacks, and I suspect that these two may have personal motives.

Absolutely not. These leaks damage our foreign policy and security efforts.

For now, I trust Obama not to abuse this technology, but I worry about possible future administrations using this for political purposes.

(20,692 posts)I was hoping more people would weigh in. Maybe this is an indication that either this matter isn't important to us or we really haven't formed an opinion yet.
Dunno.
I don't want to brave the sunday shows to find out what each side is selling: That's the problem: I don't see a clear truth here: Just alot of pole-positioning.

(62,325 posts)messenger. Those war criminals have so much to try to cover up that the minute I see them desperately trying to defend violations of the Consitution, I try to recall if they ever told the truth about anything, and the answer is 'no'.
Snowden's best defense is who is on his side and who is not.
I go with Ron Wyden, Alan Grayson, Jerry Nadler, John Conyers, the ACLU, EFF who to my knowledge have never lied about issues of Civil Liberty.
So the more old Bush cohorts show their faces on TV, all using variations of the same old propaganda and talking points, the more I am convinced that what we already know is, as other credible people have stated, just the tip of the iceberg and the old war criminals are desperate to hide it all.

(20,692 posts)It's easy to also forget that this new information gathering industry has provided some very lucrative jobs and those who hold the jobs will likely want to keep them. This is the way government expands and siphons money from the economy.
The secretive nature of all of this could also be covering up lots of people with self-interests of keeping their jobs/pensions/healthcare coming. Government will always expand. That much is clear.

(1,301 posts)i think the options you gave for the poll are well thought out, i would give it more time before concluding people are not interested.

(2,022 posts)since DU has been upset with the spying on Americans for more than a decade, I believe DU will continue to support any brave whistle blower who steps forward and helps shed light on what the government is doing illegally behind our backs.
As to the morning shows, I would recommend tuning them out, as they are highly predictable, and will only serve to get your blood pressure up, considering how much of the story you know, being a reader of DU, so it will only anger you when you hear their lame, discredited, talking points with the gist of either protecting the status quo, attacking whistle blowers, or just attacking Obama when all this started long before he came on the scene.
Thanks for the poll

(2,049 posts)voted 'Yes' but I'm also VERY worried about a President Palin or Santorum (your next-to-last choice) getting their hands on the technology, since neither shares my view of what the Constitution means or encompasses, and each would have me in the work and re-education camps before you could blink your eyes.

(14,910 posts)I am really glad that the discussion is being dragged into the light of day after having been a dirty secret of the government and acknowledged by those who were willing to search out the truth.
Interestingly enough is the speed in which individuals here were/are willing to accuse other's of blanket support of Snowden/Greenwald when their opinions were questioned (i.e. the myriad 'vanity' hit-pieces that were available last week; salary, relationship status, etc.) that bothered me.
I'm still on the fence on the leakers themselves, however fully, 100% support the discussion(s) taking place.
Now for a solution!

(10,611 posts)The President has been saying we need to have this, and if this gets Congress off its collective ass to do its job, great. Maybe they'll look more closely at outsourcing the handling of this information.
Greenwald has an agenda and I don't trust his motives or the integrity of his reporting.
I think there's something/someone behind the timing of Snowden's actions. His "I did it to save the country" jingoism doesn't ring true, especially since he's dealing secrets to avoid jail time.
