Curiouser and curiouser. Day Two of the Rupert Murdorch-Wendi Deng divorce story turned juicier when ex-British prime minister and Deng pal Tony Blair got dragged into it.
Soon after news broke Thursday that billionaire media mogul Murdoch, 82, had filed for divorce from his third wife after 14 years of marriage, journalists in the U.S. and the U.K. with close contacts to Murdoch and his media empire, News Corp., began twittering about a scandalous possible reason for split.
Said scandal turned out to be the claim that Deng, 44, had an affair with Blair, 60, who happens to be godfather of the couple's two young daughters, Grace, 11, and Chloe, 9.
Blair, the former New Labor PM who was embraced politically by the conservative Tory/Republican Murdoch when he was in power, denied the claim through a spokesman today. But the way the denial was worded led to more speculation.

(24,324 posts)Deng is the family name of Deng Xiao Ping.
It was also the family name of a good friend of mine in, of all places, Chengdu, Sichuan Province.
And my wife is Chinese, although her family name is not Deng, nor is she from Sichuan.
But to join in your humorous Sat afternoon, When I was in Sichuan once, we took a bus that was run by a similar bus company with an interesting name, at least when translated into English..-- Long Dong.

A little of my background and a humorous rejoinder by way of the name of the bus company. When I was sitting on the bus with my then girlfriend and told her what the bus name meant in English, she was a bit embarrassed, to say the least.

(25,453 posts)Wendy Deng isn't being minimized in the OP's title because she's a woman, she's being minimized because she isn't famous in her own right. If Tony Blair was having sex with Murdoch's son or nephew, I wouldn't bother mentioning the son or nephew's name in an OP about it.

In the shuffling madness
Of the locomotive breath,
Runs the all-time loser,
Headlong to his death.
He feels the piston scraping --
Steam breaking on his brow --
Old Charlie stole the handle and
The train won't stop going --
No way to slow down.
He sees his children jumping off
At the stations -- one by one.
His woman and his best friend --
In bed and having fun.
He's crawling down the corridor
On his hands and knees --
Old Charlie stole the handle and
The train won't stop going --
No way to slow down.
He hears the silence howling --
Catches angels as they fall.
And the all-time winner
Has got him by the balls.
He picks up Gideon's Bible --
Open at page one --
God stole the handle and
The train won't stop going --
No way to slow down.

People Are Googling "Wendi Deng Tony Blair"
In the wake of the news that Rupert Murdoch has filed for divorce against Wendi Deng, people seem to be entering the above-referenced search terms into Google. Presumably, they're just trying to look up a column Murdoch biographer Michael Wolff wrote last year in the Guardian, headlined "Tony Blair and the Murdochs: A Family Affair," which includes this passage:
Blair becomes one of Wendi's first official social conquests, in her developing role both as Murdoch social emissary and social power player. Wendi Murdoch becomes a curious wrinkle in the power equationa way for Blair to see himself as having control of Murdoch, of joining with Wendi to handle him.
It is Wendi Murdoch who, in 2008, when I am writing about her husband, urges me to speak to Blair; she personally sets up the appointment.
Wolff's column must have had quite an impact in some circles, though we can't quite gauge reader response since a note at the bottom of the piece says, "This article will not be open to comment for legal reasons."
There was some reaction on Twitter, though, back when the column was originally published:
