This will just motivate women to vote for a candidate they view as supportive of women.

indicated how out-of-touch with reality Republicans are at this time.

They have become the party of religious extremists - and I don't know anyone who wants religious extremists making laws of the land for the rest of us.

which, come on, is more than a little perverted.

this woman has an interesting take on this issue:

http://www.truth-out.org/its-sex-stupid/1328651002

In the space of 15 years, the Supreme Court ruled that laws against birth control, pornography, and abortion were unconstitutional. At the same time, the women's and gay rights movements revolutionized popular culture, the family, and the workplace. Almost half the states repealed their anti-sodomy laws.

First these activists - surprisingly, mostly women - went after the Equal Rights Amendment and they killed it. Then they organized to stop the government from funding child care. And they succeeded. Then they ran a referendum to take civil rights away from gays. And they won again.

The author is talking about the 1970s - and, again, she notes that the leaders at that time - the ones who fought against progress - were women. The govt had traditionally been involved in colluding with the church to oppress women - then the govt said - oh wait, that's not right.

Women were attacking other women who had a different view of how to live in the world.

Using religion as their excuse.

The author also has this IMPORTANT bit to add -

Democrats blame their base and then they have a hard time getting the base to vote. That's exactly what happened in 2010. Democrats fell into the trap set for them by the Tea Party. They got scared; they shut up about their progressive values and they ran to the Right - and 40 million people who voted in 2008 stayed home and the Tea Party swept into power.

Besides that, the analysis is just flat out factually wrong. Democrats win for being culturally progressive.

I think we've seen proof that the Democratic base is worth supporting in these last few days. Just because a small group is noisy - that doesn't mean they speak for most voters.

strong and hence they cave in. They seemingly do not know how to put up a good fight and stick to what "their" base wants, and they cave into supporting those that scream the loudest. I find it ever so frustrating. I find 2008 sooo frustrating. The dem politicians had everything, and IMO they F'ed it up.

to what has happened regarding women's health care these last couple of weeks.

There are other issues that deserve another look, as well, but a compromise that allows bishops to continue to tut-tut while no one pays attention to what they say while women continue to receive contraceptive benefits w/o co-pay is a huge win - and the numbers that sided with Planned Parenthood rather than the right wingers and Komen - honestly, I think the Komen "brand" has been ruined by associating itself with right wingers in people's minds - esp. women.

That's the lesson Democrats should get from this moment - kowtowing to the right isn't a winning strategy. A compromise that doesn't benefit the progressive base is no compromise.

women's rights and a black man in the White House - no wonder the right wingers are sputtering with hate... it would be sickly funny if it were not so deadly seriously wrong.

I have to hope those women pull their heads out and finally see what's been obvious to the rest of us for decades.

The evangelicals and one-issue voters get all tingly and excited when the GOP wages war on a woman's right to choose... but this is another thing altogether. I hope enough of them are paying attention, or failing that, that we can wage a campaign to rub their complacent faces in it.
