Government Spending Improves Lives, in China

I'm old enough to remember when we did this kind of "government spending." We even did it without maintaining a cheap labor pool at gunpoint.

Have you heard that China is sending people into space? Have you heard about China’s high-speed rail lines linking their major cities? Have you heard that China has built the fastest supercomputer in the world? These are results of the dreaded “government spending” that Republicans say is such a bad thing. They’re doing it, we aren’t.

Manned Space Flight

I’m old enough to remember America’s first Mercury space flights and Alan Shepard and John Glenn. Then Gemini, then Apollo and our moon landings and our Space Shuttle. (I remember going to a “ticker tape parade” for McDivitt and White in 1965.)

Now we don’t even have the Space Shuttle. Republicans have pretty much killed off American manned space flight because it is “government spending.” (We have to pay Russia to give our astronauts rides to the space station.

...in age.

I remember those events as beacons of what was right with America. We were the bastion of ingenuity and progress (remember "American knowhow?&quot ; and we were the defenders of freedom and liberty.

China was to be feared. We knew it was hellbent on seizing SE Asia via Vietnam, then consuming our allies in Australia. We knew it wanted eventually to march down MainStreet, USA!

AAAHHHHHH!!!!! The Commies are coming! The Commies are coming!

I remember a monthly air-raid siren test. It reminded us of who was out to get us! I remember "duck and cover" drills in elementary school (I wondered then how ducking and covering was going to protect us from an a-bomb, but who was I to question the teachers?).

But then, imagine the disconnect when we learned CorpUSA, the entities that warned us about communism and made a mint from the "defense industry," started doing business with the "commies."

I remember thinking, "What the...?!!" when household items began bearing the label, "Made in China." I remember the confusion when I saw clothes "Made in Vietnam" and 'Made in Cambodia." Weren't these countries our sworn enemies?

A DUer recently observed the only reason Hugo Chavez (before his death) and Fidel Castro are still our "enemies" is because they wouldn't let CorpUSA into Venezuela and Cuba.

But now everything's hunky-dory with China, Vietnam, Cambodia, et al who supply CorpUSA with cheap materials and cheap labor at slave wages.

"Trickle Down" was a hoax, and I'll never understand how the Republicans, who've cast themselves as ueber-patriots, are so vehemently anti-USA. They hate any American who doesn't share and support without question their narrow, oppressive agenda. And they'll forge partnerships with "commies" if it means more money in their pockets.

It's been an eye-opening 60 years...

The good ones let American corporations use their virtual slave labor, and the bad ones don't.
