They started doing that with Falwell and Pat Robertson in the late 70's and 80's. from churches they would get their people to run for GOP delegate or committee positions. Once they had majorities in the local committees it was straight forward to leverage majorities in the district and state committees, and of course the national.

So yes. The GOP is a conservative Christian religious cabal and has been for years. At all levels; probably in all states.

And I don't want to be doing anything.

There is still an Old Guard that worships mammon instead of Jebus. They're the ones who congratulate themselves on using the godly to get what they wanted: gutting the middle class and beggaring labor to fatten themselves. They're the ones who told the fundies and baggers to sit down and shut up in 2012 and vote for the "electable" Mitt Romney, someone who could certainly be counted upon to continue that process.

A lot of fundies, especially the younger ones, realize they've been used by the top. We might be seeing the beginning of fundies turning apolitical the way they were before televangelism whipped them into a frenzy.

The leadership made a series of deals with a series of devils: southern bigots, religious nutters and anti tax anarchists. Now those devils all want control.

2016 is going to be interesting to watch. The various groups are not going to sit down and shut up a second time.

It really is interesting to watch the death match between the Old Guard and the nutjobs, especially in view of the fact they need each other all the more in order to have a big enough voting bloc. I could tell years ago it would come to this, back when they courted each other, yet each side was really willing only to give lip service to the other, and that's all it only took then.

Though the young fundies will still be listening to their church leaders and voting as a result. And the devils have always wanted control, religion is just a tool to influence minds toward their political goals, but now as you say, they believe they have the power to wrest control.

stop working to elect Democrats and to turn out Democratic voters in maximum possible numbers. That's when.

spout fundie religious crap when it suits them, 'Sanctity of Rick Warren' and all that, the anti gay stuff, the constant smug announcements of their own devotion. 'I'm a Christian so I'm against those un Sanctified gays having marriage rights just like my brother in Christ Tom Coburn'.
Pretend it is just the GOP if you want, for some of us that laughable. Obama and his wife are fans of hate preachers whom they employed as campaign surrogates. Own it.
