A debt worth passing on to our kids (Time to rebuild America)
A lot is said these days about the ethics of piling up public debt and passing it on to our kids . What you dont hear very often is that, sometimes, thats the right thing to do.
My grandparents generation, for example, passed along a hefty tab for the cost of winning World War II. Another huge, inter-generational bill was created in the 1950s, when the federal government established the Federal Highway Trust Fund, floated bonds and levied new fuel taxes to build the Interstate Highway System.
In both cases, vast amounts of money were borrowed and spent. The cost was passed along to future generations. But, despite being obligated to repay the debt, the children and grandchildren of the Greatest Generation got a good deal. What we received a country free of Nazi domination and a modern transportation grid was more valuable than any federal surplus we might have inherited.
Its time we did something similar for our kids by committing to rebuild the countrys aging infrastructure.
