...and there is no consistent, reliable feedback mechanism. Full appraisal and accounting of the enforcer's behavior is not given until after the enforcer's demise, by which time it is too late for the enforcer to inform his still-living colleagues where they may have deviated from recommended procedure and have gone astray.
The wide variety of claims to be the authoritative "God's Law" supports this.

This seems to be rather poor planning for the Creator Of The Universe. So I guess my question to Rick is: If you believe God actually did set up His Law this way, why are you worshiping Him?

More seriously, one can call it "God's Law" all one wants, until we start seeing some well-targeted Blue Bolts From The Heavens it is mere mortals who do the actual enforcement. Which makes it Mere Mortals' Law, and we have some documents he might want to read about the passing and enforcement of those.

I can testify that going to a Catholic church in the USA can feel very similar to a Republican Party rally, except that what the culprit in the pulpit is selling, the congregation isn't buying. A recent study found that 98 per cent of sexually active Catholic women in the US have used birth control. Being a mostly obedient Catholic, I've concluded from all this that horses (no mules!) are to race only on weekdays, bareback, and in missionary pole position.

Anyway, I merely note that it's easy to overlook the wondrous advances in human happiness made available by the advent of birth control. Here are two random examples taken from material I've just happened across recently.

In 1880, James Roosevelt married the much younger Sara Delano expecting happiness and companionship. However, she had a difficult time bearing and birthing their son Franklin, and doctors advised her to have no more children. So at age 28, she became celibate to prevent further pregnancy, leading naturally to two decades of marital strain and misery.

At the other end of the social spectrum, in 1905, the novelist James Joyce and his wife Nora lived in poverty when their son, George, was born. The couple thereafter determined to sleep head to foot as an attempt at birth control. It didn't work. Their daughter was born quite soon after.

All of which is to say that the world is not going to hell in a handbasket. And loosening the grip of religious zealots over our laws and lives will rock no great moral foundations

When their message is ignored by 98% of their congregants? If they can be that wrong about condoms and birth control, why would one assume that they are right about anything else?

Why dance if you think the lyrics are dumb?

Because otherwise you'll sit out a lot, or you'll only dance to instrumental music.

Side-splitting laughter all the way through. I loved when he told CNN they sucked because of how they went person to person breaking the news about Whitney Houston's death. I'm on the phone trying to tell my sister how hilarious the show was but you just have to see it for yourself.

This is like shooting fish in a barrel. Who couldn't "nail it" when the target is this easy? His material is always non-threatening to the status quo. Have you noticed?

Meanwhile, he lovingly fellates his neocon guests every time they come on his show. I can't stand to watch him anymore.

it may be easy, but he's probably the only high-profile person on TV willing and able to do it. You're obviously exaggerating the way he is towards his guests, but he does have to at least be outwardly polite to them or they would never come back. This way, at least he can attract conservatives on to the show and figuratively stick the knife in when the time is right.

The fact that most TV is a vast wasteland of useless crap does not make Jon Stewart any less of an ass. But what about Keith Olbermann (the man who Jon Stewart compared to Glenn Beck)? He manages to mock the same targets without flinging shit at liberals at regular intervals.

Did you not see Jon Stewart's interviews with Condie Rice? It was a nauseating love-fest that gave me dry heaves, and his treatment of all neo-cons has been nothing if not gentle (holding them up as good people who made simply mistakes while trying to do the right thing). When he interviewed Obama, he was much tougher.

Generally speaking, he picks safe, easy targets (FoxNews, the religious right) which is why I say he's overpraised (and it's really his writers who deserve what little credit is due). My active dislike for him stems from the fact that he's given the middle finger to progressives over and over again. There have been many DU threads about it. And yet, let a little time go by and all is forgotten, it would seem. I hate seeing someone like Stewart being allowed to wear the mantle of liberal champion when he is anything but.
