Santorum Shouted Down At Washington State Rally by Occupy Protestors

After meeting with opponents of Washington State's recent legalization of gay marriage, Rick Santorum was shouted down by Occupy protestors at a rally outside the Washington State History Museum in Tacoma.

Rick Santorum meets with gay-marriage foes in Washington state

"I told them to keep up the fight, that this is an important issue for our families; it is an important issue for religious liberty," the former Pennsylvania senator said of his meeting with church leaders, during a news conference Monday afternoon.

...

"We have a serious issue about trying to get moms and dads to marry and stay together," he said.

"I don’t see this as encouraging that. I think that at least from my perspective it tends to water down marriage instead of encouraging men and women to form healthy marriages, and that to me should be the objective of the government because that is in the best interests of our society."

Santorum lashed out at gay-marriage backers for insulting those who feel differently, taking exception to a recent 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that struck down California’s ban on same-sex marriage.

this goomer is the Republican nominee. Seriously!
He will bring the whole party down. Then, the House
can be re-taken, and the Senate can be kept in
sane hands.

Fewere men and women should be encouraged to marry. Half, to be exact. And hosed down just might do it. Men and women marrying cuz Gov said so, is the stupidest reason to marry. And to lay that on same sex couples, is about the least show of personal responsibility I have heard.

believe those young girls are suppressed at home from thinking on their own. They seemed to have lived a very sheltered life. When you go out into the working world things are so different. They are in for a shock.

7. Rick Santorum lashes out against gay-marriage backers but hits the court.

Santorum lashed out at gay-marriage backers for insulting those who feel differently, taking exception to a recent 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that struck down California’s ban on same-sex marriage.

"It’s pretty intolerant to suggest that people have no rational reason to be in favor of this institution that has been the bulwark of society for 235 years," Santorum said, calling for both sides of the marriage debate to "be respectful."

In its ruling, a three-judge 9th Circuit panel said California’s ban on gay marriage "serves no purpose, and has no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians in California."

Actually Rick, you are arguing with the court here, so it is not really a situation of "both sides being respectful." And while the court is not accepting your reasoning, it did not say "there is no rational reason ......." What it basically said is that the main effect of a ban is to lessen the dignity of gays and lesbians and that a ban serves no other purpose. Now you think a ban does serve a purpose, but the court disagrees with you. That is not the same as being disrespectful of your argument.

OTOH, many of us do have little respect for your argument, because we can say what the court cannot, that your argument that being FOR gay marriage is somehow being AGAINST hetero marriage. You see Rick, that argument does not make a great deal of sense, some might say it makes no sense, so it is really really hard to have much respect for such an argument. You see Rick, as in many situations, respect must be earned. And you don't earn respect for your arguments by saying things which make no sense. A gay marriage does not somehow diminish your hetero marriage no matter how many times you and others repeat that claim.

Protesters Shout Down Santorum As He Speaks Against Marriage Equality In Washington State

By Igor Volsky

Occupy Wall Street protesters nearly drowned out Rick Santorum for 44 minutes as he tried to deliver remarks at the Washington State History Museum in Tacoma, Washington on Monday night. Speaking from a balcony, Santorum sought to condemn the state’s newly-enacted same-sex marriage law and the Ninth Circuit’s ruling against Proposition 8, but was repeatedly interrupted by protesters yelling, “we are the 99 percent.” Santorum told the protesters to “go out and get a job,” adding:

SANTORUM: I know this is a very important day in Washington. And in many respects a sad day for many people. We saw the law signed into here in Washington sate. But it is very important you understand what just happened in another place….in the Ninth Circuit….The Ninth Circuit decided that anybody that disagrees with any of these folks, anyone who disagrees with these folks when it comes to the issue if what marriage is in this country, well they are irrational. That’s what the Ninth Circuit said. They said anybody who disagrees with their decision to shoot down Prop 8 in California, they do so because they are irrational and the only possible reason they can possibly…

Before he could mischaracterize the court’s decision, however, a scuffle broke out. Police shoved two men to the ground, tased and arrested them. Santorum briefly paused in his remarks and said, “Let’s give a hand to our men and women in uniform. It’s not easy.”

He described the protesters as a “radical element” that represents “true intolerance,” but claimed that he understood “their frustration” at being left behind by “a president that doesn’t care about them.” “We got to provide an opportunity for them,” he insisted. “Instead of standing here unemployed, yelling at somebody, to go out out there and try to work for a living.” Watch videos of the event:

I remember on town hall where a woman in a wheel chair was shouted down.
It brought her to tears. Protesting a speech with a mic check is nothing
close to as bad as that. Concrete brains like Santorum deserve what they
get when it comes to the potential voters. Give Ricky and all the Rethug
candidates hell.

It always gives the ass-clown (in this case Rick-Belongs locked in a-Sanatorium) gets a media sound bit out of it. And the sound bit is almost always an exact counter-factual. In this case it was that the "Occupy Movement were the ones who were intolerant". (Which we know to be the reverse of the truth - but that is a hard sound bit to counter...)

How does the legal recognition of same sex marriage affect the ability of men and women to form a healthy marriage (I presume he's talking about marriage between a man and a woman)? Or is this one of those fact- and reality-free assertions that is just allowed a pass from the Bulldogs of the Fourth Estate because it's being spouted by some right-wing nincompoop?
