Finally, Carter's solar panels are coming back! So says President Obamas new Climate Action Plan.
This is symbolic of the President taking leadership on Climate. Well done.
Sorry this is short but important element in new plan deserved recognition.

(10,440 posts)When the first words in the article are "Carter's solar panels". Which were lambasted at the time and when torn down and were pretty much demonized then. This is a whole nother ball of wax.
And as a solar guy, I frequently hear the phrase "my so and so has solar and it it doesn't work" or "was a waste of money" or "an eyesore" when they are not making the distinction between water and electricity. (AND BTW, they do work, there is nothing that would prevent them from working).

(27,787 posts)The whining about what the president should have done four years ago is endless.
Apparently the economy wasn't in free fall.
Anyway, its always good to see the democratic president's motives questioned on DU when he does or says something positive.
HooptieWagon
(17,064 posts)Now, it just looks like a cheap stunt...as another DUer termed it. No reason to give points now. Where has Obamas concern for enviroment and energy saving been the past 4 1/2 years?

(17,064 posts)And every single one of us was voting for a change of Bush policies. To be sure, Congress has been petulant. But he had a two year period to get things done, and he squandered it. Many things could have been done without congressional approval, and he continued status quo. Not one of his critics on DU want him to fail, and not one expects him to be 100% perfect...but he just isn't delivering the change he promised and we expected. So we lost hope, and perhaps might bring an end to Bush3.0 in 2016.
Summer Hathaway

So nice to grandstand like that but try to actually be the environmental President and solve the problems of the country not just grandstand.

(10,440 posts)Seriously this is more like the HC bill more and more. And like the HC bill it will be written by lobbyists. And the energy companies will write policy and that means we are FUCKED no matter what. He knows that. There is only one way, and ONE WAY only that we can reverse climate change (if we can at all is open to debate) and that is rooftop solar. And the Corporations will NEVER NEVER NEVER EVER give up how they make money to support solar rooftop power.
lets face it, Obama has put the fox in the henhouse in almost every single instance and there is no reason to think that this will not be exactly the same. (Penny Pritzker????, Ben Bernake? The Monsanto Guy? and on and on)
I am glad that I live where we have a socialist power company that really helps with solar power through rebates etc. instead of gouges for profit. SMUD. the difference is startling.
That and ending the Corporations are people thing.
"Seriously this is more like the HC bill more and more. And like the HC bill it will be written by lobbyists."
...it's not a "bill."

Obama delivered a real stemwinder on the moral urgency of cutting carbon pollution (video, transcript below). So of course Politico reports, Cable news skips Obamas climate speech.
The President surprised everyone by bringing up the Keystone XL pipeline, even though aides had said he wouldnt. Obama left his Administration very little room for approving it. Heck, he even called them tar sandsa phrase that oil sands advocates never use.
And Obama gave Climate Hawks a new slogan: Invest, divest. MSNBCs Chris Hayes tweeted:
Christopher Hayes ✔ @chrislhayes
"Invest, divest" is the most crypto-radical line the President has ever uttered.

Climatologist Michael Mann said of the speech, It is the most aggressive and promising climate plan to come out of the executive branch in years and President Obama should be applauded for the bold leadership he has shown in confronting the climate change threat head on.
Since this is such an impressive and well-crafted speech, with many lines you will want to quote again and again, Ill post the entire transcript below. Its hard to say what the best part was, but we knew yesterday that he was going to put on the table a plan to meet his Copenhagen target of a 17% reduction in carbon pollution by 2005, including regulations for existing power plants.

White House Timetable Slips for Solar Roof
Amid a surge of solar energy industry moves aimed at making installations faster, easier, and more affordable, one of the highest-profile rooftop projects is taking longer than hoped.
The Obama administration missed its planned spring 2011 date for putting solar photovoltaic (PV) panels and a heating system atop the White Housean effort meant to boost the profile of the renewable energy technology by bringing it back to the U.S. presidential residence for the first time in 25 years.
