The American Century. D'oh!
When Henry Luce called the 20th Century "The American Century" I doubt he expected to be so literally accurate, in calendar terms. When the American Century ended at the turn of the millenium it was like the warranty expired and the doors promptly fell off. Here's just the first three years of the non-American Century:
1) The stock market bubble burst began a couple of months into 2000an event that (IMO) played out fairly directly into our current global economy. (I consider the stock and housing bubbles phases of one huge financial-instrument bubble.)
2) Late in 2000 a guy with 500,000 fewer votes was installed as President
3) In 2001 the US renounced any practical intention of moderating her increasing debt, instead declaring that wealthy people ought not pay taxes.
4) 9/11
5) In early 2003 the United States invaded and occupied a non-belligerent nation to secure the re-election (sic) of the president, bringing about the premature deaths of 100,000 people as a campaign stunt.
