To Paula Deen and others:

I draw a line at age 36. By then you have been an adult for as long as you were not. If you are still a racist or have other bigoted views, you can no longer blame your upbringing. If you are older than that, you own your own bigotry. No excuses...

I have no idea where he got it from. We have had several talks with him about.

We are all strongly influenced by parents, for good or bad. Once we are on our own, though, tesponsibility shifts to us. We can become what we choose to become, and we must own our adult selves at some point. I use age 36 as a marker.

His racism seems to only be directed at Chinese people. He seems totally cool with everyone else. So we took him to a yummy Chinese buffet, and he really liked it. I think that combined with the talks have helped. But we're still watchful.

Kids at school, an adult cartoon (South Park, Family Guy, etc.), a misunderstanding, we really don't know.

i'm thinking school could be most likely. either he was being picked on by a chinese student or other kids are picking on a chinese kid and he is joining in.

i think it's important to try to find out where he learned this.

the chinese food thing could be ok but could also result in just having stereotypes of other people.

We think we have it all straightened out, and then a month latter or so he will say something really off, and it is always about Chinese people. "They talk funny." "They're weird."

That may be a good point about the food.

There was a controversial study concluding that children learn more of their values from peers than parents. The study wasn't promoting the idea, just stating the results. What a child hears from peers at school, etc, can warp them.

His racism seems to only be directed at Chinese people, which we find really strange. He's just made some strange comments about Chinese people on a few occasions, but he seems fine with Koreans, etc.

Maybe he had a bad encounter with another child or even a Chinese adult and has taken that to another level?

Strange that it's only Chinese and not other Asian people.

remember "stereotypical black women" when Obama was running for office?

No doubt this will be hidden as was the post pointing out that you expressed vile homophobic crap on Free Republic, as well.

Anybody can look up MineralMan on Free Republic and see what he posted there.

1) Gay adults should not be trusted around children
2) He related a "delightful" personal story about "stereotypical black woman" who supported Obama.
