Bittersweet
I've been with my partner for over seven years now. The general consensus seems to be that the US Supreme Court will likely strike down DOMA, which will no doubt prompt my partner to propose. He's hinted at this for years and it is something that we both want for legal as well as spiritual reasons.
This is so bittersweet for me. I, in all good conscious cannot fully immerse in the DOMA and prop 8 decision, and what it will mean for us, seeing what transpired in the US Supreme Court in regard to the Voting Rights Act. This is a setback of unmeasurable proportion that I pray will ignite anyone who is truly oppressed by our system of government.
As a 2008 voter in California, we were overcome with joy with the election of our first African American President. We were also heartbroken with the passage on prop 8. It was and will always be a bittersweet day for us.
No matter how long it takes, I will stand with my party, with my friends and with my family, until everyone in this country is treated fairly. I may or may not receive marriage equality, but I make this commitment. I will be there, with the minorities of this country until long after I have died as a minority myself. I will not give up until justice is finally served in this great nation. I will never give up.
We all deserve the right to vote in free and fair elections.
