Texas Democratic Party chair: Sen. Wendy Davis should run for governor

Gilberto Hinojosa, chairman of the Texas Democratic Party, said he hopes that Sen. Wendy Davis (d), who conducted a 10-hour filibuster against a bill that would close all but five abortion clinics in the state and ban all abortions after 20 weeks, will run for statewide office. Speaking to Raw Story from the Texas Capitol on Tuesday night, Hinojosa said she would likely win a bid for the governor’s office thanks to her marathon filibuster.

“I’m so proud of her effort and what she’s showed Texas,” Hinojosa said. “Women deserve, in this state, to be treated with dignity. I think that she’s taken it to the Republicans in a way that was not expected. She has put them to shame and made us all very, very, very proud.”

Asked about her potential political future, Hinojosa cracked a wide grin. “Wendy is not only extremely intelligent and articulate, she’s great on the issues and she’s got a great personal story — a single mother who made it out of a life of poverty to go to Harvard law school, then gets elected to the city council and the Texas Senate by beating an incumbent Republican,” he said. “She is someone that can really, really excite people across the state of Texas, who really shows true leadership.”

“She doesn’t play games or worry about what’s going to get her votes,” Hinojosa continued. “She does what she believes is right. We’ve been sorely lacking that kind of leadership in the state of Texas for more than 20 years. So, yeah. I’m hoping she runs for statewide office, and I know that should she decide to, all of these women and men that are here today, young and old, will work their hearts out for her. She’d probably get elected governor, or whatever other office she wants to run for.”

Aren't all the districts in Texas heavily gerrymandered? Should stay in D hands, then.

The GOP tried to steal her seat and the San Antonio federal court prevented this from happening. There was a really nasty fight over her district. The DC circuit held that there was actual intent to discriminate by the Texas GOP in trying to steal her seat. Keeping Senator Davis"s seat was a major victory in the court fight

to change the boundaries of her district.

Time for her to look for a statewide office opportunity, IMO.

There was a palpable and measurable change in Texas last night. I could almost feel the state's needle moving a few ticks leftward during her filibuster. Through her strength and conviction, she's the catalyst for blue Texas needs in the here and now.

The entire state is talking about her. Good or bad, we can't help but talk about her.

Eventually however... DC should factor into her plans. She's that good.

to run for state Senator. She is very impressive one-on-one as well! She will do many more great things!
It is a shame we have to have fund raisers where favors get bartered for. Lets get COMPLETE CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM (CCFR)!!! Publicly funded elections will take a lot of the corruption out and give us our government back! Not trying to sound like a Tea Partier there but the 1% own our politicians for the most part and they will fight like hell to keep it! You want a battle, that is the one to fight next! CCFR all the way!
Thanks Wendy for showing the rest of the country (and many at DU) that Texas is not a lost cause! Maybe the ones here at DU telling us to secede will stop now. The Rethugs hold power only through gerrymandered districts.

are strong charismatic Democratic leaders who are well known statewide. I think there are a lot of closet Democrats in Texas who don't think it's worth their time and energy to vote because they are used to seeing Democrats lose. This event last night makes me hopeful that maybe we will have something to build on, even though I fully expect Perry to call another special session where this bill that went down last night will probably pass. That's just the kind of guy he is. But between Wendy Davis and the Castro brothers, we are at least starting to see some glimmers of hope that things in Texas may change for the better in the long run.
