TX Tealiban Leader Dewhurst blamed the loss in passing SB5 on: an unruly mob using Occupy Wall Street tactics"
I have a message for Mr. Dewhurst:
That was not "Occupy Wall Street" tactics.
THAT. IS. WHAT. DEMOCRACY. LOOKS. LIKE.
And you better get used to it because you all American Taliban have stirred up a HORNET'S NEST of Democracy in this country and you're going to be seeing a lot more of it. THE PEOPLE who make up this nation are not going to stand idly by while you do the bidding of moneyed interests and religious extremists - while you attempt to suppress their vote, shove ALEC model bills that they did not have any voice in crafting down their throats, while you ignore their voices in favor of the Koch Brothers and their rich corporate friends on Wall St., while you protect big business interests and profits at the expense of the middle-class and the poor -- and MOST OF ALL -- while you continue to OPPRESS women in this country and deny them their rights to health care!
Nope. That LEGISLATIVE building all you pampered politicians work in BELONGS TO THE PEOPLE. Their hard-earned tax dollars and labor BUILT that building - all of the legislative buildings in this country. They have EVERY RIGHT to assemble there at any time to TELL YOU in any peaceful way that YOU are not doing your job -- when YOU are not representing them.
And ya know what else, Dewhurst and all you other American Taliban leaders? --- No matter what rich white man or corprat interest bought your way into that office you enjoy -- WE THE PEOPLE PAY YOUR SALARIES.
Let me repeat that: No matter what rich white man bought you or what corporation paid your way into office with unlimited spending on attack ads on your behalf -- YOU. WORK. FOR. US. WE pay your salaries. And YOU are occupying OUR house.
And if you aren't doing your job, you ARE going to hear about it. In NO uncertain terms.
THAT is what Democracy looks like.
In these United States, people have DIED for Democracy.
They have rioted. They have sat on buses. They have marched. And they have DIED for it. And been murdered for it. They had DREAMS about it. And they FOUGHT to the death for that dream.
And they'll do it again.
So Mr. American Taliban leader, you had just better get used to these "Occupy Wall St tactics", as you call them, because that's WHAT. DEMOCRACY. LOOKS. LIKE.
OUR HOUSES. OUR NATION. OUR RIGHTS. OUR VOICE. AND. WE. WILL. BE. HEARD.
When WE THE PEOPLE STAND UP and REFUSE to let you take our rights and our voices away, WE. WIN. and the thieves LOSE.
Because THAT. IS. WHAT. DEMOCRACY. LOOKS. LIKE.
Get used to it, Bucko. You Goddamned, LYING, CHEATING bastards.

(10,495 posts)As we say here in Texas, Wendy has big, brass balls, pardon the expression!
Now lets fight for COMPLETE CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM (CCFR) to restore our Representative Government. Most of our Representatives, Republican and Democrat, answer to the rich and powerful because that's who gives them the big money! This needs to be the #1 issue across America now! If we do this we can protect women's reproductive rights easily everywhere!
Thanks Wendy!

(2,529 posts)Here in the state, the biggest problem is voter participation and redistricting. But, demographics are catching up to them. "For whom the bell tolls," like the song says. And it's tolling for the GOP in Texas.

(53,661 posts)TEXAS - SB5 is officially dead!!! The people win, thanks to State Senator Wendy Davis and her marathon filibuster. She is America's newest hero!!!
Texas republicans tried to cheat and say the vote took place before midnight, but everyone was watching and it was proven the vote took place 2 minutes after midnight. The vote didn't count and SB5, which would have closed almost all the abortion clinics in Texas FAILED.

The only thing I'd add in warning, is that Perry may call another special session. He vetoed of a bill for equal pay for women and believes Gawd commands him to end all abortion, period. This isn't over, but it is a great start.

(12,482 posts)The Texas GOP will now begin to gerrymander and pass voter suppression laws with a renewed vigor. But guess what? The old white establishment in this state will eventually be overwhelmed by young hispanics. They can postpone it but they can not prevent it and in the process they will make those young hispanics even more hostile to the GOP?

But, more importantly... Are there any other prospects on the National Stage that could run for President?

(2,529 posts)I'm hoping that they decide to be more than a mayor or state rep. Those two have star power. Julian more than his quieter twin, but they both appeal to a wide swath of Democrats and Independents. Elizabeth Warren, for sure, that's not even a question. But, we've got young leaders that are coming up the pipeline that are fed up with both parties and I'm thinking that we're going to have our hands full making sure they don't lure young voters into new different parties.

(22,666 posts)They're coming out. They're protesting. They're getting arrested. They're making themselves seen and heard by their governments in public spaces and in their (the people's) legislative houses.
If that doesn't work, then we'll have riots and Civil War again.
But I don't think 'we the people' are going to stand for much more of this bullshit. I think people are getting fed up.
And rightfully so.
