(81,281 posts)I really liked Rachel Maddow's metaphor on this, which she stated a few minutes ago on Chris Jansing's show - equality was like cell service as you traveled around the country, the signal would go in and out depending on where you were.
In this day and age, that's just total bullshit. TOTAL bullshit. Marriage is marriage. PERIOD. Equality is equality. PERIOD. It isn't a little bit here and a little bit there. It isn't based on some individual community's whims or rigid localized crap. It isn't "well this part is equal but your part is not..."
I'm a heterosexual. Neither my husband nor I have EVER felt that our marriage was in any way threatened, compromised, or damaged by the marriage of two gays. We've been married for 37 years. I guess some straights out there have marriages that are so tenuous and brittle and unstable that they'd just crumble over this. Well, I feel sorry for them. Maybe THAT constitutes a bad or illegitimate marriage then? Ours is as strong as ever. And yours is too, William769! Congratulations!!!!
I just think it's kind of a shame that we've had to fight this through so much obstruction and prejudice and intolerance and small-mindedness, for so long, and all the way to the freakin' Supreme Court to get to this point. Still troublesome that assholes like scalia, alito, and thomas were in a position to weigh in on this. Thank GOD they were in the minority! (Sure wish it had gone that same way yesterday.)
America takes another step forward. BUT BE ON YOUR GUARD. I say this as a woman who thought her rights were protected after Roe v Wade - and we are STILL defending that one. I hope it doesn't go the same way for the LGBT community. But there are people in this country who won't take this quietly, and I expect some of them to try to start a movement to get this reversed someday. Be on your guard. Protect the ground you've gained with everything you've got. Look what's happening to voting rights, and the right to choose. This sweet victory can VERY easily be taken away again.
William769
(55,147 posts)calimary
(81,281 posts)Because there will always be knuckle-draggers and meddlers and bedroom busybodies who will stop at nothing to take this victory away from you. And they'll be fired up by this. They won't go away quietly and accept that they're wrong, which is what should happen. They'll be defiant and they won't accept this. Count on it.

(26,622 posts)but Kennedy decided maybe he could redeem himself for one of the worst decisions ever.
For whatever reason, it's a good day when Kennedy decides for our Constitution, but it'll be an even better day when we are finally rid of the corrupt five justices who are changing our country to fit their narrow conservative view and the Constitution be damned.
But I will join you in saying Yayyyyyyyyyyyyy!!

(275 posts)The most @#$#@'ed up part about this is here in AZ the morning news was discussing the "split ruling" like they somehow didn't just open up the path for the whole country to stop segregating the LBGT community. Then again, that's the media for you.
First blacks. Then women. Now LGBT. One day we will truly champion the equality that out country so often touts yet so often smashes down.

(36,745 posts)Equality won't be until someone gets a case up there that forces the SCOTUS to overturn the gay marriage bans.
This states right crap they pulled on Prop 8 today was bullshit. Grow a pair SCOTUS and strike it ALL down.
Equality isn't a states right issue, it's a human rights issue.

(13,616 posts)an executive order would not have done the job, the battle needed to be dragged out into the court.

(6,578 posts)So Obama still needs to fulfill his campaign promise and better protect federal workers.

DonCoquixote
(13,616 posts)because when people argue for that last bit of right, they will have momentum. They can say "look, the supreme court just killed the part of Doma you were quoting, are you really going to hold out on this one bit of heterosexual turf when you just had your legs cut out from under you? You got the cash to buck us in lawsuits now that the SCOTUS has ruled?"

They had better start getting their forms changed.

(9,895 posts)Down goes DOMA...
Patriot Act, FISA, the abomination of Citizen's United decision...all still haunt me, but tonight's a night for those affected by one fewer injustice than they were one revolution of this rock ago!
For my formerly closeted gay college roommates and friends throughout the years - guys and gals, I couldn't be happier for you now and I hope you feel a little more at peace in your home country - for yourselves and the people you are rather than the superficial blessing of the SCOTUS. We have loved you and viewed as equals all along, we just finally got to some critical mass in this nation to force the less charitable among us to slink into their own dark corners rather than to force you to hide your true selves in those corners.
It was NEVER your shame that the bigots and hateful hurled around, it was mine and all of ours who were not targeted by invective and intolerance yet could not stop it. Today, we all got a little bit of dignity back, but for the LGBT community, today you regain the protection of the law that has been missing too long and I am nearly as happy as you for it.
It truly is a Beautiful Day!
