Just after 11 A.M., the President called. Kaplan picked up the phone and gave it to Windsor. Hello, who am I talking to? Windsor said. Oh, Barack Obama? I wanted to thank you. I think your coming out for us made such a difference throughout the country.

(15,512 posts)Congratulations to all!
He didn't fight DOMA - he just refused to have the Justice Dept argue it.
Not sure how he can claim victory from non-involvement
Ok.

(18,402 posts)Not defending it meant that the only group who would have standing to defend it was BLAG (The House of Representatives (read Republican) Legal Advisory Group).
In addition, under Obama, the Justice Department filed a legal brief arguing for the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act and asked the Supreme Court to hear two cases challenging the law's constitutionality.
So yes, they DID fight DOMA, even at the Court. When the Executive Branch takes a stance like that, it matters in the outcome.
