it's time for the world premiere of "Attack of the Killer D's 2", starring Wendy Davis.
Remember the Killer D's? They decided the only way to stop Tom DeLay's gerrymandering plan was to bust quorum. And since the Texas Rangers (the state police, not the baseball team ) have the power to haul their asses to Austin from anywhere in Texas, they had to leave the state. They holed up in a motel in Ardmore, Okla. for over a week.
For extra drama this time, they could head in the other direction, to Mexico (which isn't that much farther from Austin, if at all) and claim political asylum.

(37,748 posts)I remember that all too well. I remember the shock I felt upon hearing Tom Delay had called the Homeland Security apparatus to find the Democratic legislators and have them returned to Texas.
It was in that singular moment when I realized what the GOP (the party of my father and maternal grandfather, a party I had respected to a point, and a party which I still (naively) defined as the party of Eisenhower) had become-- a bunch of rich, elderly white gangsters who have no scruples and no agenda other than winning at any cost.

(78,249 posts)He must have inhaled too much bug spray, like Dale on King of the Hill.
Speaking of which, you know Peggy Hill would have been in there, while Hank and the boys fretted and fumed outside. The twist would be that they'd be the ones who got arrested, for drinking their Alamo beers on the Capitol grounds.

(37,748 posts)There are times when I can actually see Hank and Dale in place of Delay and Dewhurst. Same mannerisms, same speech patterns, same everything (except beer-- DeLay and Dewhurst drink imported when they drink beer at all... usually it's Scotch for those two).
And of course, when the Alamo police tries to let Delay know he's breaking the law, he'll simply respond (again) with "I AM the law" as he famously did while puffing a cigar in an Austin restaurant with a no-smoking policy.

(78,249 posts)maybe Boomhower as DeLay.
Before he was revealed as a bottom-feeding sleazeball , John Edwards used to say that he always tried (figuratively speaking) to get Hank Hill's vote.

(41,694 posts)The Original Killer Bees were in 1979.
And I'm proud to say that my Congressman, Lloyd Doggett was one of them.

(22,298 posts)the Killer Ds ran to Oklahoma.
And I remember the Killer Bees too & how the authorities ran around like chickens without heads, tearing up the state, looking for them.

(22,298 posts)they would not go to Mexico. They chose Ardmore because they could get there quickly & had a hospital where one of the representatives under medical care could receive treatment (IIRC it was Lucio, who was the only one put on a plane). The rest of them snuck away one by one during a break, got on a bus chartered by Raymond & paid for on his credit card, & were headed off north on I 35 before anyone else knew they were gone.
True story: The reps had been up all night because the republicans figured they were going to do something, so they never moved to adjourn the proceedings. Finally, at some point during the day, a recess was called & that's when they scampered for the bus. Raymond told us that as he was finally nodding off on the bus, the driver popped in a video for them to watch. It was, I kid you not, "Catch Me If You Can."
I don't remember how they had the bus standing at the ready for such a long time, but things were so secretive, the driver didn't know who he was driving or where they were going until the doors closed.

(78,249 posts)I looked it up. And the medical care would be a lot cheaper.
Great story!

(22,298 posts)especially since there's a wonderful photo op just begging to be done on Bridge 1 on the southern side of the International Boundary line. But they decided on principle to remain in the US.
