Ok, I do not mean to rain on the LGBT parade, nor downplay the civil rights voters, but I am confused, how can the same court do two diverse rulings in one week?
I hate being paranoid, but can this be some sort of divide and conquer power play, something to say "Hey, white LGBT, screw the minorities, join Andrew Sullivan and Glenn Greenwald over here on the right wing."

(130,927 posts)and a real mistake. EVERY court decision, ESPECIALLY a Supreme Court decision, MUST be read and analyzed on its own.
I look forward to seeing Linda Greenhouse's analysis, in NYT, some time shortly.

(7,008 posts)the four on the left and four on the right have been consistent. The vote in either was 5 to four. Roberts, Alito, Scalia and Thomas ruled against both the VRA and Marriage Equality. Breyer Ginsberg, Sotomayor and Kagan ruled for both. Kennedy is the swing vote.
Also, look more closely at the rulings where it has been more unanimous, e.g. 7-2 one way or the other.

(10,960 posts)Kennedy was the swing vote on both cases.
No conspiracy theory is required to explain one man having seemingly inconsistent views.
Most individuals hold some inconsistent views.
