The Apple co-founder tells Lloyd Grove why he supports the NSA leaker, how the agency hasnt done one thing valuable for us in regard to Prismand why the Internet wasnt supposed to be this way.
Computer whiz Steve Wozniak is more than a little distressed that the technology he helped develop nearly four decades ago is being used on a massive scale to invade peoples privacy.
Hes especially troubled by the secret intrusions into the private emails of American citizens by the National Security Agencysecret, that is, until the recent detailed revelations of the NSAs Prism program of electronic surveillance by a 29-year-old NSA contractor turned fugitive named Edward Snowden.
I think hes a hero, said the 62-year-old Wozniak, who co-founded Apple Computer with Steve Jobs and invented the Apple I and Apple II personal computers that launched a technological revolution. Hes a hero to my beliefs about how the Constitution should work. I dont think the NSA has done one thing valuable for us, in this whole Prism regard, that couldnt have been done by following the Constitution and doing it the old way.
Sitting down with me on Tuesday at the Ford Motor Co. campus in Dearborn, Michigan, during the Go Further With Ford 2013 Trend Conference, Wozniak added: I dont think terrorism is war. I think terrorism is a crime. And by using the word war weve managed to use all these weird ways to say the Constitution doesnt apply in the case of a war. And I think Edward Snowden is a hero because this came from his heart. And I really believe he was giving up his whole life because he just felt so deeply about honesty, about spying on Americans, and he wanted to tell us.

(30,058 posts)Would he still feel the same way, their conscience was telling them to do so. If Snowden is his hero one wonders who he thinks as a zero. If Snowden had sold all of the information to perhaps China then China would make the money.
Wozniak doesn't have the force of law behind him nor does he have the ability to spy on US citizens. He's not an elected official that's answerable to the public about programs he's been keeping secret.
IF HIS HOUSE WAS ON FIRE HE WOULDN'T BE SO HAPPY ABOUT THAT CAMPFIRE!!!
I have to admit, it's a novel debate strategy.

(8,514 posts)This is not about Snowden. This is about the surveillance state and how close we are to turnkey tyranny.

(30,058 posts)Statements by Snowden shows it is all about Snowden. BTW, when you dine with buzzards you can't be soaring with eagles.
