what was it like?

She seems to be sorry, I'm just not sure she really understands what she is supposed to be sorry for. I think she might be on the edge of saying, "Oh fuckit, millions and I are outtahere!"

(1,489 posts)I havnt followed what brought up the deposition, but, 2 things in the last couple of weeks are kind of scary
1) a woman is being ruined over her answer to a question involving a word she used in private over 25 years ago
2) the government is tracking every call you make, and possibly everything you say online
is it just me, or have the 1st, 4th and 5th amendments just been vaporized?
sure, it's ok because it happened to an 'evil racist'. but whos to say what will be unpopular 25 years from now? how do you know you've never said anything that might be seen as unforgivable in the future? maybe you believe in linear perfection, that nothing good could ever be unpopular in the future. history suggests otherwise, the 'Red Scare' of the 1950s was hardly a linear improvement over what came before
what an incredibly dangerous precident, and most are afraid to ask these questions, because they dont want to be seen as 'defending racism'
this is a near duplicate of the 'Red Scare' of the 1950s - interrogations about distant past, blacklisting etc
the ends of 'eliminating racism' do not justify the means of McCarthyism, because McCarthyism is so dangerous

(6,787 posts)I can't imagine defending Paula Deen--but how is it that Donald Trump and all his crapitude are continually inflicted upon us?

(50,566 posts)She did A LOT more than that -- systemic discrimination in her employment of African Americans. Are you going to defend that, too?
Also, her use of racial slurs wasn't a one-time thing.
Also, she had an antebellum fantasy of using blacks as "slave" waiters for a dinner party.
Yes, she has freedom of speech. And we have the freedom of speech to judge her for her words and actions.
Corporations who had used her as a spokeswoman don't want to be associated with her racist views. Don't they have the freedom to dump her?

(61,695 posts)Stored data. She was being sued by employees for doing nothing about a hostile work environment, including a manager who came to work drunk, was abusive to employees, and was cavalier about showing porn at work, even to minors. The suit originated with a white female employee.
