Rev. Jesse Jackson: Paula Deen Can Be 'Redeemed'

CHICAGO -- Civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson says he's agreed to help celebrity chef Paula Deen try to make amends for her past use of a racial slur, saying she shouldn't become a "sacrificial lamb" over the issue of racial intolerance.

Jackson told The Associated Press on Wednesday that Deen called him this week, and they discussed how she might recover. Jackson says if Deen is willing to acknowledge mistakes and make changes, "she should be reclaimed rather than destroyed."

Jackson says he's more troubled by racial disparities in jobs, lending, health care, business opportunities and the criminal justice system.

Her admission of using the slur first came in a lawsuit deposition. It later cost her an endorsement deal with Smithfield Foods and her job with the Food Network.

Such as using "Hymie town" to refer to New York city. I am glad to see he is not throwing stones.

during the Monica Lewinsky affair visiting the White House numerous times during that ordeal.

Unfortunately word of Jesse's illegitimate child, which he finally acknowledged in 2001, was starting to leak out during the same time period, so he had that going for him too.

One area where she can have an enormous impact is developing heart healthy recipes that everyone, including diabetics can use and find delicious. I don't give a shit if she become insanely wealthy from food lines that she develops under the mentioned constraint, she would have saved many lives and redeemed herself in one swoop.

She is the worst kind of racist - she demeans people of color and thinks there's nothing wrong with it. Deen is a flat-out bigot who treats her employees like shit. I never liked her because she was just too - weird, like she was playing some kind of role. And it turns out she was. An ignorant old white bigot.

BTW, her "apology" was a non-apology. As in "I'm sorry if anyone was offended" type of shit. She's either dumber than shit or evil.

I'd like to think her bubble has burst finally, after all these years.

Maybe she just feels sorry for herself now. Maybe she has finally gotten a clue.

I agree with you JJ doesn't speak for all black people.

On the other hand, I do believe people can redeem themselves.

Because there's a lot of good in the South, and a lot of good people too.

And there are racists north of the Mason Dixon Line as well.

So **if** you're just bashing the South, I have no use for you.

Take care with those overly broad brush wording like "traditional southern culture" that pits the good and bad together.

He would have made a great President.

He was there the day Dr. King was killed.

And he is, like all good religious people, wanting to help out those, even if those they help are directly against those that
try to help.

Of course, Rev. Jackson has been vilified in the past, but it goes without saying that Jerry Brown would have won the 1992 election had they won in NYC and as such, the smear against the Rev. Jackson by the republicans and Ed Koch(shame on Ed, after the smear that was thrown at him years earlier), cost Jerry and Jesse the nomination.

It is very charitable of Rev. Jackson. He is too good.
it is more than Paula (I is what I is) Deen should have.

I am proud of Rev. Jackson, but then I have been since day one.

Not to be disrespectful, but this would resonate more if Rev Jackson was quoted regularly and not just when it might provide cover for a racist.

her image. He's not saying this just because he likes her cooking. She didn't contact him because she's a fan of his. She paying an image consultant to redeem her image. I'm sure she's suggested Jesse because Jesse probably has a shingle out to make some money by redeeming racists images.
