I can't decide which is more annoying, conservatives or libertarians.
Conservatives are pretty much racist with an intellect rivaled only by garden tools. And libertarians tend to be either paranoid or self-centered and sociopathic. Sociopaths are manipulators. They're shallow and see others around them not as people, but only as targets and opportunities. Sociopaths are masters at influence and deception. Very little of what they say actually checks out in terms of facts or reality, but they're extremely skillful at making the things they say sound believable, even if they're just making them up out of thin air.
In 1975, Ronald Reagan stated, "I believe the very heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism". I mention this because it was Reagan who injected libertarian into conservatism which created the modern day conservative ideology that we have today. Trickle down economics is more of a libertarian idea than a conservative one. It relies on fantasy and makes no sense when you actually analyze it. Add that in with Reagan's anti-government rhetoric and you get a fusion of conservative/libertarian or in other words the modern day conservative ideology.
Anyway, what are your thoughts and which do you find more annoying?

(60,015 posts)I find libertarians selfish, deluded and utterly, impractically hypocritical.
Republicans, on the other hand, are just as bad in a very different way; they are scared shitless into easy manipulation and live in a weird world of single issue passion, even though anything but that issue is against their best interests.
do I have to really choose a worse, or can I just say all of the above?

(9,999 posts)I'll let you decide which is which. Conservatives are more dangerous because they have more power in our system. Libertarians are just plain annoying,

(11,489 posts)Conservatism has become crazy in large part to their adoption of libertarian gospel. No real conservative in the 1960's would have espoused blowing massive holes in the budget by cutting taxes without cutting spending. Causing massive budget deficits is not conservative by any stretch of the imagination.
I may agree with libertarians on a number of issues, but their simplistic vision of the world is wrong on almost every level, and is unfortunately, very appealing to many young, inexperienced people. I was a card-carrying, dues-paying Libertarian for several years, until I started realizing not every situation can be solved by making people rely on their own selves. It's a very easy philosophy to adopt for young, talented, selfish people. It excuses their greed by assuming everyone in the world should be as talented as they are.

(180 posts)I feel like it is possible to have a reasonable discussion with some of them. Typically they're anti-spying and anti-war/military industrial complex, so at least we have that in common. And I think they're a little more comfortable with the concept of this being a secular country. The younger ones, at least.
Conservatives are just plain dumb. Even the educated ones present the same, archaic arguments; just a well-spoken version.

(5,364 posts)Very parochial views on "free market" economics. Before the libertarian dogma pushed the GOP further right, there used to be at least some populist conservatives when it came to economics.

Ron Paul enjoyed a surge of popularity at DU when Bush invaded Iraq, because he was against it and so were we. This lulled a lot of people into thinking he must be our friend and ally, when nothing of the sort was true.
Libertarians are not Liberals; there is a fundamental difference in the ethos and cast of thought. It's why when they run for office, they run as Republicans.
You should just try reading Ayn Rand sometime. Ron Paul named his son for her. Paul Ryan makes Atlas Shrugged required reading for his staff and gives the book away as Xmas gifts -- and he is a putative Roman Catholic.
I find Conservatives to be pretty much what they say they are, but Libertarians give the impression that they are all for "freedom" in everything we hold dear. That's why they are more dangerous.

But conservatives who still believe in the social safety net and equal rights, conservatives like Susan Collins of Maine, are better. Unfortunately, these days there are very few of them left.

(9,289 posts)RW Libertarians are at least on the right side of SOME issues....and leftwing libertarians are practically indistinguishable from liberals.
Conservatives are wrong on EVERYTHING and if they had their way would turn this country into a totalitarian theonomy. They are pro-war, anti-freedom, theocratic, anti-woman, anti-minority, anti-gay BIGOTS who want to force their religion on everyone while enslaving them through poverty.
There is no comparison.
