Fla. Senate defeats prison privatization legislation in razor-thin vote

TALLAHASSEE --
The Florida Senate has shot down controversial prison privatization legislation by a razor-thin vote of 19 to 21.

With the vote, the proposed legislation is essentially defunct for the current legislative session.

The legislation has been a contentious issue this legislative session, most notably when Florida Senate President Mike Haridopolos removed Sen. Mike Fasano from his spot on a budget panel because he was fighting plans to privatize prisons.

Yesterday the Florida legislature voted down a bill to prevent food stamp recipients from purchasing certain foods and now this.

Maybe the Florida Republicans are moderating a little bit. I find this hard to believe but it could be. Probably because legislative districts will be more competitive from now on.

coordination between all matter of groups to have petitions signed and delivered and to encourage people to send in emails and call. I got tons of email from a myriad of groups opposing this with multiple ways to take action. I am so glad it failed but sad it failed with such a squeaker of votes.
