The worlds poorest families are cutting back on food and sending children out to work to pay for food amid soaring prices, according to a survey by British charity Save the Children.
In countries which are home to half the worlds malnourished children, a third of parents surveyed revealed that their children complained they did not have enough to eat. One in six said their children were skipping school to work for food.
The childrens charity is calling on the UK government to help lead a push to reduce hunger and protect children from food price spikes. It is urging British prime minister David Cameron to kick-start this with a world hunger summit at the Olympics - a time when world leaders will be in London - to tackle malnutrition.
The survey, conducted by the charity in India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru and Bangladesh, provides a snapshot of the hardship that families are facing in countries already experiencing high rates of malnutrition.

Republican response: Good. That leaves more food for the rich people who actually deserve it.

What is left to cut?
Shame on us, and our elected "leaders" who squabble over trillions of dollars for weapons and war.

President Obama Sends FY13 Budget Proposal to Congress
<...>
The Presidents FY13 budget for the Department of State and USAID strengthens U.S. national security, advances Americas economic interests, and elevates Americas global leadership through diplomacy and development. It supports U.S. businesses, protects Americans at home and abroad, and stops the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. It supports our allies and partners, prevents conflict, promotes democracy, and reflects our core values.
Making up just 1 percent of the U.S. Governments overall budget, the Department of State/USAID budget totals $51.6 billion. The request provides the most cost-efficient way to ensure diplomats and development experts have the resources necessary to address complex threats to our national security and promote our economic renewal.
$1.0 billion for the global hunger and food security initiative, Feed the Future, to reduce poverty, hunger, and under-nutrition through sustainable investments in agriculture-focused economic growth. Together with the Department of Treasurys contribution to the Global Agriculture and Food Security Program, this funding will enable the United States to reach millions of beneficiaries. The request supports implementing country-owned strategies that integrate the efforts of smallholder farmers, the private sector, governments, and civil society and provides them with the tools to achieve sustainable results.

in Tanzania. We chose the child. He is in far more danger than our church. This is so sad. And what really hurts me is that I am pretty sure the world is not going to do anything about it. If they were it would already be done.

While no Republican has, to my knowledge, actually said that, somehow it wouldn't surprise me to hear it spewing from some right-winger's mouth.
