'We're tired of being prostitutes'

'We're tired of being prostitutes'

Prostitutes in Catania, Sicily, left a letter on a wall on a street in one of Catania's poorest suburbs, appealing to the city's mayor, Enzo Bianco, to help change their lives.

"We live in this neighbourhood, we voted for you...we want to identify with the world of work, we are tired of being prostitutes."

The letter was pinned to the wall of an apartment block, which houses a brothel in the suburb of San Berillo, the Catania edition of Corriere del Mezzogiorno reported.

The suburb is one of the poorest in Catania, "where prostitution and delinquency co-exist", the newspaper said.

the 99% do prostitute their bodies for the 1%, does not always translate into sex though - usually into labor.

Personally, if I could start my own business selling myself for sex to women I probably would.

But yeah, that ain't gonna happen as my only clients would be my right and left hand and they don't pay well....

I understand you were making a joke, but it was insensitive to what these women go through.

We all trade our bodies/labor.

When it is forced, in any manner - that is wrong.

And forced can be, as some would note, the absence of other choices.

Given choices - if someone wants to do such things, they are using their skills for their own gain (which they should have the right to do).

Absent choices, that is a different matter.

In that our society (not just the US) leaves little choice in the matter at times I get the anger/etc over prostitution. On the other hand, still in the society thing, I think people should be free to do so if that is what benefits them the most.

Ideal situation - where no one needs to but wants to.

Current situation - People need to work and choose that line as it best fits their interests (ie, they make more doing that than other jobs).

Worst situation - forced to as no other choices exist.

It is not all black and white.

I am making the point that, though there are great difficulties in the labor market that need to be addressed, there is no comparison, and that equating them shows insensitivity to the plight of the women making this protest.
