Wesley Clark launches grilled cheese truck's veterans program.

Last edited Thu Jul 4, 2013, 03:43 AM - Edit history (1)

The former four-star general is visiting San Antonio this week not to talk about his decorated past. He came to talk grilled cheese sandwiches.

“They're, as I like to say, battle proven,” Clark said.

At the Boys & Girls Club on the East Side on Wednesday, Clark announced the launch of a program to hire 100 veterans as the first franchisees of the Los Angeles-based Grilled Cheese Truck.

Clark said he has sampled and enjoyed the food truck's gooey sandwiches many times since the company first approached him last summer. His office will help connect the Grilled Cheese Truck with veterans across the nation.

“We really need the best people we can find to be the franchise owners of these trucks,” Clark said in an interview earlier this week. “It's all about leadership, and that's something veterans learn by serving, and they bring a lot of that to the private sector.”

The food truck already has its first veteran franchise candidate: Retired Sgt. First Class Vernon Gibson, who served in the Marine Corps and Army for a combined 20 years.

edit: San Antonio is the first market in Texas for The Grilled Cheese Truck. The company has plans to expand to Dallas, Austin, and Houston.

The Grilled Cheese Truck has trucks in Los Angeles, Ventura/Santa Barbara, Phoenix and now San Antonio with plans to have 100 trucks across the country in the next year. For more information, visit www.thegrilledcheesetruck.com.

What a wonderful piece of news!

From your link

Gibson and other franchise candidates can expect to pay a franchise fee of about $25,000, said Grilled Cheese Truck founder Dave Danhi.

He hopes to keep the average cost of opening one of his food trucks, including supplies and the actual vehicle, below $100,000.

“We want to work with veterans on that,” Danhi added. “They may not have the means to do that in one lump sum... It doesn't have to be paid all at once.”

PS...I love Wes Clarke
