1. Man, it's exciting, isn't it? Where will NSA leaker Edward Snowden end up? Will he live in limbo in a TGI Friday's in the Moscow airport? Will he get asylum? Where will he take a shit? Does he have access to shampoo? Holy fuck, tell us more about his plea bargain deal offers and his attempts to find a country to take him. Tell us more because the more we hear about Edward Snowden, fugitive from the butthurt U.S. government, the less we have to grapple with what Snowden's leaked documents actually reveal about the U.S. surveillance state.

5. The Snowden chronicles (and, to a lesser extent, the irrelevant Glenn-Greenwald-is-such-an-asshole attacks) are an enormous distraction from the real stories, the massive extent of spying on Americans without suspicion or warrant (which, the Rude Pundit has said repeatedly, is something that at least deserves a good debate) and Director of National Intelligence James Clapper lying to Congress. And if these things don't matter to you, especially those of you on the left side of the political wall, if you think "security" has been compromised or some such shit that hasn't been demonstrated at all, well, congratulations. You're finally on the side of George W. Bush, John Yoo, Dick Cheney, and other assorted war criminals.

Trapped in Transit: Orwellian Moscow Airport Hotel

-snip-

EDITOR'S NOTE: Eastern Europe News Director Ian Phillips flew from his home base of Prague in the Czech Republic to Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport with the goal of getting to the bottom of the mystery of fugitive NSA leaker Edward Snowden. What followed was a surreal 21 hours.

———

The woman at the transit desk raises an eyebrow and stares at my flight itinerary, which includes a 21-hour layover in Moscow before a connection to Ukraine. "Why would ANYONE stay here in transit for so long? There are so many earlier connections you could have taken. This is strange behavior."

After a nearly two-hour wait inside the terminal, a bus picks me up — only me — from the transit area. We drive slowly across the tarmac, through a barrier, past electronic gates covered in barbed wire and security cameras.

The main part of the Novotel is out of bounds. My allotted wing feels like a lockup: You are obliged to stay in your room, except for brief walks along the corridor. Three cameras track your movements along the hallway and beam the images back to a multiscreen monitor. It's comforting to see a sign instructing me that, in case of an emergency, the locks on heavily fortified doors leading to the elevators will open.

When I try to leave my room, the guard outside springs to his feet. I ask him why room service isn't responding and if there's any other way to get food. He growls: "Extension 70!" I rile him by asking about the Wi-Fi, which isn't working: "Extension 75!" he snarls.

zone of the hotel..

Transit passengers were not allowed to wonder about in the hotel. We had security staff (who spoke no English) following us everywhere we went. They reminded me of the former KGB. Apparently they were very afraid of us transit passengers running away into their country. As if.
The KGB agents were there to see when we had our brekkie and lunch. Both were quite horrible but I ate them, since the vending machine only spat out chocolate that was out of date. The staff showed no mercy and treated us like inmates with a life sentence. Everyone thought the same way. Most of the people were German, but even they were silent around the KGB. I was able to understand however how unwelcomed they felt. This was a relief, since I thought maybe I was imagining it all due to high fever.
Personally I think that had I stayed in the hotel as a normal tourist with a visa, I would have gotten better treatment. I mean, honestly, we had our own isolated section and we had no access to anywhere, except the vending machine that only took Russian currency. Products in the vending machine war about three months out of date. Novotel was a 4 star hotel, but for transit passengers the stars don’t really shine. We were treated as a nuisance rather than guests of their hotel.
The standard of service was very low at Novotel. They would pretend not to speak English when it suited them. I am not high maintenance, I have travelled a bit and seen very bad accommodation and service.
This experience was both amusing and horrible. I kept my game face on the whole time, since I think it would only have gotten worse had I complained. I would not recommend anyone to stay at Novotel Sheremetyevo as a transit passenger. When I flew back from Tokyo, I had to spend one night in Moscow again. This time I chose to sleep on the floor in the terminal building. It turned out to be quite the pleasant surprise.

The guard allows me to stretch my legs in the corridor. The signs on the wall rub things in. 14. Check out the reviews on TripAdvisor for the no-Visa Transit part of the hotel..
Fri Jul 5, 2013, 12:26 AM
Jul 2013

There are two parts to the hotel..Snowden is confined to the non-Visa Transit zone...many of the tripadvisor reports on this section say how horrible it is..

http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g298484-d305522-Reviews-Novotel_Moscow_Sheremetyevo-Moscow_Central_Russia.html

My first time writing review on TripAdvisor. The terrible experience brought me here.
I booked the flight tickets with Aeroflot from Switzerland to Moscow and from Moscow to Hong Kong. Unluckily, as the 1st flight was delayed for two hours, I could not catch the next flight to HK; so I ended up staying with Novotel for a night together with other unfortunate passenegrs under the airline's plan.

At the front desk, we were told by the only receptionist that we have to share a double room with another passenger, who was a complete stranger to us. We were brought to this so-called non-visa transit zone, where we were not allowed to go anywhere but staying in our room for 24 hours, with a secuirty guard watching us to ensure we do not leave this floor.

As the meals provided by the airline were really not edible, I called for room service. Someone picked up the phone after 20minutes of calling. It took so long to take a simple order because the room service person did not understand english very well, so I had to repeat several times very slowly, and she get pissed when she did not understand something. I suppose the hotel should at least hire people who have a good command of english to take this position. Room service arrived after 15minutes which is reasonable, however they brought me a full bottle of wine when I requested just a glass. When I pay with my visa card, it was not working. The room service person tried several times but still it failed, I told her that I have just used it in the airport and it worked, but she demonstrate impatience and seemed not trusting I can pay. So I was taken by the security guard to the Front desk to pay, the payment was done with the first try. It proved that it was not my fault but the problem of there machine, but they did not appologize for this. When I went back to my room, the food was not hot anymore. This was really unpleasant when you pay for it but you were subjected to bad service and cold food. Due to time lag, I stayed up very late, so I informed the front desk that I didn't need any breakfast, and did not want to be disturbed. I mentioned 'Don't knock my door'. However, someone knocked my door fiercely in the early morning to send me breakfast. Clearly, the hotel did not care about my request at all, and no communication was made between the respective departments. Regarding the free wi-fi service, the signal was weak, the internet ran very slow, and I had to reconnect it to the wi-fi many times. This made me very frustrated because it was urgent to contact my family through internet to inform them about my situation.

Conclusion: Though I had only stayed in the non-visa transit zone, it was still part of the hotel; so I believed my comments were useful to reflect the bad hospitality service of this hotel. I expect we should be treated the same as other guests because it was not our fault missing the flight. Most of the staffs did not smile and were not friendly; they showed impatience and disrespect. The rooms were nice, spacious and clean, and the bed was pretty comfortable, but I considered service a more important aspect that directly affects your mood. Overall experience was poor. I was surprised that this hotel is a four-star. Two advices: This hotel is not worth staying. Never book Aeroflot. (If you go through other comments of this hotel, you'll see other similar cases happened very frequently

42. How to make Pelmini (Russian Dumplings)
Fri Jul 5, 2013, 12:55 AM
Jul 2013

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 eggs
1/2 cup water
1/2 pound ground beef
1/2 pound ground pork
2 large onions, finely chopped
salt & black pepper, to taste
Garlic, to taste

Steps

1) To make the dough, combine the flour, eggs, water and a 1/2 teaspoon salt. Knead mixture.
2) Mix the ground beef, ground pork, chopped onions, salt, pepper and garlic together.
3) Roll the dough into a thin layer and cut into small circles.
4) Place a small amount of meat in the center of each circle of dough.
5) Fold the edges of the dough over the meat and bend the "points" together back along the fold to make a small ear shaped dumpling. If the folded dough doesn't stick moisten the edge of the dumpling with a little water to make them stick.
6) Boil the Pelmini in salted water until they float to the surface (~7 min). #Serve them in soup plates with butter, sour cream, or broth. Great as both a main dish or side.
7) Enjoy!

...but the only dates I got from that article were here:

On Monday, Putin said Snowden could only be granted asylum by Moscow if he agreed to stop actions that could harm the United States.

Putin's press secretary, Dmitry Peskov, said on Tuesday that Snowden had withdrawn his interest in asylum in Russia after Putin spelled out the terms. His options have narrowed further since then as no country has agreed to grant him asylum.

And when did Morales' plane leave Russia? Tuesday

As others have pointed out, it's unlikely he was on the plane but I still haven't seen anything that can rule it out. Bolivia will play this for all it can get but Evo "no bald girly boys" Morales' 15 minutes of fame are probably winding down unless he actually took the little chicken-eating geek back as a little recuerdo of his fabulous Russian vacation.

And so much conflicting information, that linked article reports Snowden is STILL in the transit area of the Moscow airport and unless I missed something that hotel does not look like it's inside the transit area.

Way too many questions, it's all extremely salacious I have to admit I've become addicted to the story. So many players, so many moves, so blurred the lines between who's the good guy and who isn't.

Can't wait for the movie

MOSCOW | Fri Jul 5, 2013 12:08am IST

(Reuters) - Edward Snowden should find another country to seek refuge in, a Russian official said on Thursday, signalling Moscow's growing impatience over the former U.S. spy agency contractor's stay at a Moscow airport.

Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Russia had received no request for political asylum from Snowden and he had to solve his problems himself after 11 days in the transit area of Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport.
