So Gov. Walker...how's all that workin out for ya?

Remember the other day when I pointed out the similar histories/make-up of Minnesota and Wisconsin - but how different the politics in each state have been lately?

Well...the jobs numbers for metropolitan areas were recently released. Guess who's #1 with an unemployment rate of 4.7%. Yes, that would be the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area. And perhaps it will come as no surprise who clocks in at #31 with an unemployment rate of 7.3%. You guessed, its the Milwaukee-Waukesha-West Allis, WI Metropolitan Area.

In other words, Gov. Walker and his cronies in the state legislature are blowing it for the people of Wisconsin just like Republicans are trying to do to all of us. Its WAY past time to vote those lunatics out of office!

Midterms Matter!!!

As long as President Obama is in the White House and Democrats control the Senate, we'll be able to stop the lunacy of the Republicans these days when it comes to federal legislation. They can hold as many votes in the House as they want on ending Obamacare and stripping away our constitutional rights as women - but they won't ever be successful in actually getting those kinds of things done.

Where the real damage to people is being done these days is in state legislatures and governor's offices. From attempts to try to throw monkey wrenches into the implementation of Obamacare to voting restrictions to the stripping away of worker's rights to the extreme restrictions on a woman's right to chose to ridiculous requirements in our children's classrooms to even ending unemployment benefits in North Carolina, the Republicans are mounting an all-out assault on decency and fair play in states all over the country.

Its not just happening in so-called "red states" but it is a direct result of the 2010 midterm elections that swept Republicans into power in state legislatures and governorships. In my home state of Minnesota, we initially went there too in 2010. But we elected a Democratic governor by a razor thin margin and were able to hold on for 2 years until we elected a Democratic legislature in 2012. If you want to know what a difference that makes, take a look at this comparison to our neighbors next door in Wisconsin.

Under Walker, we've become an embarrassment, and our quality of life is eroding.

You bet votes matter. I will be doing all I can in 2014, that is for sure.

Do you know what my 'tax break' will amount to? About $1.60 a week. Instead of investing in things that matter, we get a meager 'tax break' so Scott Walker can beat his chest about how he cut taxes. Oh, and that tax break (percentage-wise) is about the same whether you make 35,000 or 200,000+ a year. (I don't have the exact salary brackets there, but the spread is about right. )

Starting in 1980, with Ronald Reagan, anyone not already very wealthy who was voting for Republicans was voting against his or her own self-interest. You'd think more people would have figured it out by now, but they don't. They keep on thinking ideology, such as putting up the 10 Commandments in various public spaces, or telling women what to do with their bodies is more important than having decent public schools or adequate fire departments, both of which require paying taxes. They have absolutely no sense of the common good.

This comparison of Wisconsin and Minnesota points out the folly these days of putting Republicans in control.

Hopefully the national party will get its shit together in the next 16 months and give people some good reasons to go to the polls. Repuke rank-and-file turn out better because they know their reps are doing their bidding (as twisted as it is). If the Dems want similar enthusiasm they should try representing their voters instead of so-called "moderate Republicans"
